Mr. Trump was officially nominated and chose his 'deputy'

The Republican convention has just kicked off and will last four days in downtown Milwaukee, just two days after Mr. Trump narrowly escaped an assassination attempt in Pennsylvania, and just hours after he won a major legal victory when a federal judge dismissed one of the criminal prosecutions against him.

Mr Trump is expected to accept the Republican nomination in a speech on Thursday, formally launching his bid to challenge Democratic President Joe Biden in the November 5 election.

Mr. Vance, former President Trump’s “vice-general,” is only 39 years old. Notably, this young politician was a fierce critic of Mr. Trump in 2016, but later became one of his strongest defenders.

Shortly after Mr Trump’s announcement, Vance appeared on the Republican convention floor with his wife, Usha. He was beaming as he was formally nominated as vice president and is scheduled to deliver a speech at the convention on Wednesday.

Vance is well-liked by key Trump supporters, who see him as having a strong political approach similar to the former US President. Mr Biden told reporters in Maryland that Vance is "Trump's copycat on issues".

Polls show the race for the White House between Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden remains tight, although Mr. Trump has a slight lead in several battleground states that could decide the election.

After the assassination attempt, Mr. Trump said he would revise his nomination acceptance speech, emphasizing national unity instead of emphasizing the differences between him and President Biden.

"This is an opportunity to bring the country, even the world, closer together. It's going to be very, very different than it was two days ago," Trump told the Washington Examiner.
