According to a statement from the Singapore Prime Minister’s Office, Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong will visit Suzhou, Beijing and Shanghai during his visit until November 29. The visit comes as Singapore and China are strengthening their cooperation, having recently signed 25 agreements at the annual high-level bilateral meeting between the two countries.
This is Lee Hsien Loong's first visit to China since stepping down as Singapore's prime minister in May and handing over the leadership to Lawrence Wong. He will complete the transition of power to Singapore's fourth generation of leaders by handing over the post of secretary-general of the ruling People's Action Party (PAP) at the PAP's biennial conference on November 23-24.
During his stay in Suzhou, Mr Lee will participate in activities to celebrate the 30th anniversary of the establishment of Suzhou Industrial Park (SIP), the first government-to-government cooperation project between Singapore and China, together with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng.
Mr Lee Hsien Loong will deliver a speech at the roundtable on “High-quality Development at SIP”, visit the SIP 30 Years of Achievements exhibition, new joint projects of Singapore companies at SIP and participate in a tree planting ceremony.
In Beijing, he met with senior Chinese leaders, including President Xi Jinping and Chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference Wang Huning.
The visit to Shanghai will include discussions with local leaders and interactions with Singaporeans living in the city.
Singapore is Shanghai's largest foreign investor, with total investment reaching nearly US$26 billion in the first half of 2024. Shanghai ranks as Singapore's second-largest investment destination in China, after Jiangsu province.
