US President Donald Trump made a new statement on Greenland on March 24, as Danish leaders criticized a planned trip this week by a high-ranking US delegation to the self-governing territory of the Nordic country.

Reuters news agency quoted President Trump as saying that Washington is working with people in Greenland who want something to happen, referring to his repeated calls for the US to annex the autonomous Danish territory.
Speaking to reporters after a cabinet meeting, the US leader shared: "I think Greenland is something that could be in our future."
The statement added to tensions as Danish officials criticized a planned visit by a US delegation led by National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Usha Vance, wife of Vice President JD Vance, to Greenland to visit a US military base there.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen said the visit was "inappropriate" and untimely because the Greenland government is in a caretaker government after the election on March 11.
Earlier, Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen also expressed concern about the Greenland issue and affirmed that any cooperation must be based on respect for sovereignty. According to her, any dialogue related to Greenland must be carried out in close coordination between the Danish government and the future government of this island.
Greenland, an autonomous territory of Denmark, is strategically important as it lies on the shortest route between Europe and North America. This location is considered to be crucial to the US ballistic missile warning system, making it a priority for the Trump administration.
The White House boss has repeatedly expressed his desire for Greenland to become part of the US territory and has not ruled out the possibility of using economic or military power to control the world's largest island.
