On March 24, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said that US President Donald Trump's 25% tax on any country buying oil and gas from the South American country is "illegal and ineffective".

Mr. Maduro said that Venezuela is on track to restore production, despite unilateral sanctions from the world's largest economy.
Speaking on national television, President Maduro stressed: "The current war is about production, supply, export and development. The Venezuelan people are fully provided with what they need and this country will never become a colony of any country."
Meanwhile, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil also wrote on Telegram that the US is seeking to repeat coercive measures to limit Venezuela's growth - a strategy that Caracas insists has failed.
The South American country also warned that it would take all necessary actions before international organizations to protest the above measure.
Earlier, President Trump announced that any country buying oil or gas from Venezuela would be subject to a 25% tax on trade transactions with Washington.
On the social network Truth Social, the White House owner affirmed that this secondary tax will take effect from April 2.
The tariffs are likely to increase the tax burden on China, which purchased 68% of Venezuela's oil exports in 2023.
The 2024 report of the US Energy Information Administration also shows that Spain, India, Russia and Singapore are also among the countries importing oil from Venezuela.
