Tran Hung Dao Commune, Ly Nhan District is a locality with potential and advantages in agricultural development. Promoting that strength, in the process of building advanced new rural areas (NTM), towards model NTM, the commune has focused on renovating mixed gardens, building model gardens, and applying science and technology in agricultural cultivation. Thereby, not only creating a new look for the countryside, but also increasing people's income.
The model garden of Mr. Tran Van Thuy's family (Tho Oc village) is one of the typical examples that many local people come to visit and learn from. The garden has an area of 1,200m2 and Mr. Thuy planned to grow red-fleshed dragon fruit. The garden has invested in installing a water tank, an irrigation system, an organic waste treatment pit... Thanks to that, taking care of the plants is convenient and highly effective.
Model garden of Mrs. Nguyen Thi Vinh in Tho Oc village, Tran Hung Dao commune (Ly Nhan, Ha Nam province).
Mr. Tran Van Thuy said: My family has been growing red-fleshed dragon fruit since 2014, but only in small quantities, planting wherever is convenient, so the trees are dense, making care difficult, and the economic efficiency is not high. In 2022, implementing the commune's policy and instructions on renovating mixed gardens into model gardens, my family and I started to renovate the garden, only then did we see the value of garden land when invested in the right direction.
After attending training courses on dragon fruit growing techniques (from how to choose varieties, planting methods, and how to care for dragon fruit trees to produce high-yield, good-quality fruit), Mr. Thuy began to make beds and plant dragon fruit according to the standard of concrete pillars with a height of more than 1 meter from the ground to the top, each bed has a groove for irrigation.
According to Mr. Thuy, dragon fruit trees have spreading roots so they are suitable for high land. Dragon fruit photosynthesizes strongly so the distance between each tree is 2.5 - 3m is suitable. Thanks to applying and implementing the correct technical process, each year Mr. Thuy's dragon fruit garden produces 3 batches of fruit, with an average price of 20,000 - 40,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, Mr. Thuy has an income of about 120 million VND/year.
In 2022, with the support and encouragement of officials at all levels, sectors and organizations, Ms. Nguyen Thi Vinh's family in Tho Oc village also boldly transformed a 750m2 mixed garden growing dragon fruit into a model garden. After transforming the mixed garden, the productivity and quality of dragon fruit trees were much higher.
Ms. Vinh shared: Previously, the family only planted on a small, fragmented scale, without applying science and technology in cultivation, leading to low crop yields and poor economic efficiency. Since renovating the garden, the yield of dragon fruit trees has reached 1.3 to 1.5 tons/year, bringing in nearly 100 million VND/year in revenue.
Tran Hung Dao Commune started to build a model garden in 2022. Initially, the commune selected a number of households with suitable land areas for pilot implementation, sent responsible officials to guide and work with the people.
In addition to the support capital of 3 million VND/model, Tran Hung Dao commune also creates conditions for people to access preferential loans; participate in training courses, transfer of science and technology...
After 2 years of implementing the model, the whole commune now has 5 model gardens, mainly growing dragon fruit. On average, each garden generates an income of 70 - 150 million VND/year. Not only bringing high economic efficiency, the model garden also contributes to creating a new look for the rural landscape here.
Mr. Pham Tran Hanh, Chairman of the Commune Farmers' Association, said: In the coming time, Tran Hung Dao Commune will continue to promote propaganda, mobilize, and guide people to renovate mixed gardens, along with increasing resources to support and help households register to build model gardens. In 2024, the commune strives to have more model gardens, contributing to promoting economic development and increasing farmers' income.
