The person mentioned is Mrs. Pham Thi Toan, from Van Long village, Dong region (now Nam Sach district, Hai Duong province).

According to Dai Viet Su Ky Toan Thu, during the time when the country was still under the rule of the Liang army, in Van Long village there was a man named Pham Luong whose wife died early, so he raised his daughter, Pham Thi Toan, alone. He was a man of great ambition, so he always reminded his daughter about the pain of the people losing their country. Pham Luong was also the one who taught martial arts and how to arrange troops and battle formations to Pham Thi Toan.

When he heard that Ly Bi had raised the flag of uprising, Pham Luong sold all his assets and joined the army with his daughter. Later, his daughter Pham Thi Toan became an outstanding general of the Van Xuan state.

During the wars, Pham Thi Toan, although a woman, demonstrated extraordinary bravery and became a famous female general, respected by the army and people and feared by the enemy.

After the country gained autonomy, in 542, Pham Thi Toan participated in defeating the Liang invaders' plot to re-establish their domination when they sent troops across the border. In 543, she followed the veteran general Pham Tu to defeat the Lam Ap army in the South.

In January of the year Giap Ty (544), Ly Bi ascended the throne, calling himself Ly Nam De, taking the reign name Thien Duc and naming the country Van Xuan. After ascending the throne, remembering the girl who led the army into battle, the king wanted to bring Pham Thi Toan into the palace to be his queen, but she tactfully refused.

“For the sake of national restoration, I, as a woman, must also contribute my part. That is my great wish and I cannot ask for anything more. Now that the great task has been accomplished, I only ask that you allow me to stay in my homeland to take care of my parents' graves, enjoy the fields, and listen to the Buddhist scriptures every day,” the female general refused.

Knowing that it would be difficult to change her mind, and not daring to force her, Ly Bi accepted this request. From then on, Pham Thi Toan returned to her hometown to practice asceticism until her death, when the people built a temple to worship her and honored her as Thanh Hoang.
