Nguyen Ngoc Linh, born in 2003, is a third-year student majoring in Dentistry at Hanoi Medical University. Recently, Linh became the "student of the year", representing all students of the school this school year. "Student of the year" is a contest organized by Hanoi Medical University to find a well-rounded individual with knowledge, communication skills, inspiration, foreign language skills and other soft skills. Candidates went through 4 rounds, including: Submitting documents; Knowledge and debate competition; Talent competition; Foreign language behavior and handling situations in the field of medical examination and treatment in the final night. Linh was surprised when she won the championship. The female student said that this was an opportunity for her to improve herself, not only in the classroom and at the hospital.

Originally the class monitor of the Dentistry class, Ngoc Linh was “nominated” by her classmates to participate in the competition because of her good academic performance with an average score of 8.3/10 and her position as Vice President of the Study Committee at the Dentistry student club. Surpassing many candidates to enter the talent round, Ngoc Linh performed a musical, combining dance, dancing and piano. “Although I am not good at playing the piano, not very good at dancing and have never attended any dance classes, I want to challenge myself to do things I have never tried before,” Linh said.

As a result, Linh was one of the five contestants who made it to the final round. In the final night, in the role of a doctor, Linh had to handle the situation of consulting a patient who had just received the results of being HIV positive. Receiving the unexpected situation, Linh was a bit confused. “At that time, I had to try to keep my composure as a doctor. I asked the patient if he knew the consequences of what he had done. The patient (played by the actor) said: 'I know but I still did it'. That was also the guiding sentence for me to find a way to solve the problem”. The organizers pushed the situation to a climax when the patient's wife appeared and "interacted" when she learned that her husband was HIV positive. Linh lost her composure for a moment but then tried to separate the couple, encouraged them, and at the same time counseled and explained to both of them to better understand the disease. During the 7 minutes on stage, Linh said she was satisfied because she had used what she knew to approach and support the patient. In the foreign language performance round, each contestant was given the choice of answering in English or French. Linh's question is related to the topic: "Do you think that doctors' prejudice against the LGBT community will affect the quality of medical examination and treatment?". Linh confidently used English to answer: "If doctors accept the LGBT community and treat them like normal people, that is, have empathy, understanding, and respect for patients, they will certainly provide appropriate services. On the contrary, if doctors have certain prejudices against the LGBT community, even if they do not say it directly, it will become a barrier that sometimes makes the two people not understand each other or the doctor and patient lose connection. This also makes the patient's feelings and experiences not good." Linh believes that doctors should not let personal feelings affect their work, when every patient wants to be understood in order to receive the best treatment. Being serious and having carefully prepared knowledge for each round, in the end, the female student won the highest position.

Ngoc Linh said that winning the title of "student of the year" gave her positive energy, helping her to be more confident when she was one year behind in her studies. Previously, the former student of the High School for the Gifted in Natural Sciences scored 27.7 points, not enough to pass the entrance exam to Hanoi Medical University. Linh was devastated, but then decided to postpone her studies at Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy. A year later, she retook the exam and scored 28.9 points, becoming the valedictorian of the Dentistry - Maxillofacial Department at her dream school. "I hope this award will become a motivation to help me strive to develop more each year," Linh said. Currently, Linh has an IELTS score of 7.0, and has a winning report in the framework of the International Conference on Dentistry Science and Training last October. Thanks to these achievements, in March 2025, Linh will be one of two students from Hanoi Medical University participating in a short-term exchange program in Niigata Prefecture, Japan. The female medical student said that in the coming time, in addition to participating in school events and activities, Linh aims to continue studying and researching to achieve the best results.
