According to Director of Hong Van Flower, Ornamental Plant and Service Cooperative Nguyen Van Tu, from 2014-2015, Hong Van switched to growing ornamental plants and medicinal plants, of which Moringa is considered the main crop. “Moringa has been widely used since 2010 until now, mainly providing essential vitamins for the body. Moringa leaves have high nutritional content and many health benefits, but not everyone can eat them well. Previously, Moringa grew wild in many places, such as Thanh Hoa, Ninh Thuan, Binh Thuan... Recently, many people have whispered to each other about its high nutritional value, so they look to buy it to add to their daily menu. From that value, Hong Van has expanded this plant variety at the Cooperative”, Mr. Nguyen Van Tu shared.

From growing vegetables and selling products, the Hong Van Flower, Ornamental Plants and Services Cooperative has taken a step further, which is to process them into tea products. Director of the Hong Van Flower, Ornamental Plants and Services Cooperative Nguyen Van Tu said that if moringa is considered a common vegetable and sold, the value obtained will not be high, and consumption will be unsustainable. From these limitations, the Cooperative aims to process them into tea products, which are convenient, valuable and highly sustainable.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thanh Loan, a member of the Hong Van Ornamental Plants and Services Cooperative, said that Moringa is a woody plant, easy to grow, easy to adapt to natural conditions, and prefers alluvial soil along the river. Moringa is harvested 3 times a year, 3 months/time (except 3 months in winter). When newly planted, fertilize with phosphate fertilizer to keep the plant healthy. After each harvest, rest for 1 week, continue to fertilize with composted manure and pay attention to watering the plant evenly, and repeat this cycle all year round. However, if you only plant it to grow vegetables for daily meals, you will only need to replace the plant once every few decades. If you harvest it all year round to produce tea, you will need to replace the plant every 3 years.

After many years of production, in 2019, Hong Van Moringa tea was ranked 4 stars OCOP. The highlight of the Moringa tea product is that it is 100% from clean herbs; of which there are only 2 main ingredients: 98% Moringa and 2% Stevia. The production process is quite simple, after harvesting, the Moringa is washed, chopped (by machine). Then dried, ground into powder, packed in filter bags according to standards, achieving safety certification. Specification: 20 tea bags packed into 1 box, weight about 200g, selling price 60,000 VND/box, on average each year the Cooperative consumes about 1,000 boxes of Moringa tea.
