Mr. Nguyen Van Bac, a long-time farmer in Dinh village, Tien An commune, excitedly shared: “To prepare for the Tet flower crop, from the end of the 9th lunar month, my family started planting flowers. This year, my family increased the area for growing gladiolus from 0.5 sao to 1.5 sao with more than 4,000 flower plants planted. On the remaining area, my family grows chrysanthemums, dahlias, sunflowers... Growing flowers also requires always paying attention to each stage of flower development to be able to supplement nutrients for the plants in time, so that the flowers bloom on time".
In the large flower fields in Dinh village, Bai 2 village, and Cua Dinh field (Tien An commune), the working atmosphere is more urgent than ever. Some people are taking care of the plants, picking weeds, others are fertilizing and spraying water. Families in Tien An are placing high hopes on this year's flower season. With an area of more than 2 sao growing flowers, Ms. Pham Thi Diem, Dinh village, Tien An commune, said: "If there are no flowers, the atmosphere will be very sad. Making flowers is hard work but fun, because we contribute to beautifying every home. The weather in the past few days has been very favorable for the flowers to grow and develop at the right stage. This year's flower crop promises to be very good."
Along with the flower growing households of Tien An commune, at this time, many flower growing households in Yen Giang ward, Quang Yen town, are also actively preparing for the Tet flower crop. With more than 15 years of experience in flower growing, to prepare for the Tet flower crop, Mr. Pham Ngoc Hoan's family, zone 1, Yen Giang ward, has invested in a system of curtains and lighting to serve the production of Tet flowers on an area of 5 sao. Each Tet flower crop always brings Mr. Hoan's family a profit of 180 - 200 million VND.
With knowledge and experience in growing flowers, Mr. Hoan's family always strictly follows the technical process. Mr. Hoan shared: "Around the end of October, flower farmers like us prepare the land and seeds to sow and prepare flowers for Tet. To take care of the flowers to bloom on time for Tet, I have to proactively monitor and pay attention to each stage of flower development, invest in a mist-proof film for the flowers, light up the lights so that the flowers can enjoy the light, force them to grow at night, as well as supplement nutrients for the plants in time, so that the flowers bloom on time. This year, to meet the demand of the Tet flower market, my family not only grows traditional flowers but also experiments with new varieties to diversify products. This year, I have introduced Royal chrysanthemums, colorful marigolds...".
In addition to proactively growing new types of flowers to meet customer needs, farmers in Quang Yen town also focus on environmentally friendly farming techniques. Many households have used organic fertilizers and biological measures to limit pests and diseases, both protecting the environment and improving flower quality.
Ms. Bui Thi Huyen, Chairwoman of the Farmers' Association of Tien An Commune, said: "The assessment shows that growing flowers brings higher income than growing other crops and rice. Therefore, this year, the number of flower-growing households in our locality has also increased to nearly 200 households. In particular, for the Farmers' Association, we regularly pay attention, create conditions, encourage and guide flower-growing households to apply advances and friendly farming methods, ensure the quality of the soil environment as well as bring clean and safe flower products to the market, to ensure that flowers from Tien An in particular and the whole town of Quang Yen are present everywhere during Tet."
