Completing the final steps to release the shrimp, Mr. Tran Van Hoai, a shrimp farmer in Phan Hien village, Vinh Son commune, Vinh Linh district, said that entering the new shrimp farming season, he has renovated the pond, carefully treated the water source with chemicals such as Chloril and lime powder. He also selected the shrimp seeds from a reliable facility, with full quarantine documents.

“My family has 7,000 square meters of shrimp ponds. In the 2023 shrimp farming season, I raised 3 crops, but due to the heavily polluted water environment, the shrimp fry died every 15-20 days, causing a loss of more than 70 million VND. This year, I plan to raise about 150,000 shrimp fry. Currently, all preparations have been completed for breeding. Hopefully this year's farming season will be successful to make up for the losses of last year," said Mr. Hoai.

As one of the very successful high-tech shrimp farming households in Vinh Son commune, Mr. Tran Van Dung is currently completing the final stages to release a new crop of shrimp. According to Mr. Dung, shrimp farming according to the CPF Combine process requires large investments and high technology. In addition to rebuilding the banks, cleaning the tarpaulins in the pond, and installing roofs, Mr. Dung also invested money to repair and add an aeration system to provide enough oxygen for the shrimp.

Mr. Dung has pumped the water into the ponds to treat them with chemicals. Mr. Dung said that he will release the first batch of about 150,000 white-leg shrimp. After about 15 days, he will release the second batch and continue like this until all 4 ponds are filled.

"Raising shrimp in a "rolling" manner, following a 3-phase method like this, not only limits risks, but also helps shrimp grow quickly and the harvest size is large," said Mr. Dung.

Vice Chairman of Vinh Son Commune People's Committee Ho Ngoc Quyet informed that the whole commune currently has more than 166 hectares of shrimp farming area. In 2023, due to some factors related to the environment, seed sources, technical farming processes, and poor water quality management, many households did not comply with the crop schedule and recommendations of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, did not comply with the regulations on community shrimp farming, and when an epidemic occurred, they hid the epidemic, arbitrarily discharged polluted pond water into the environment, especially the situation of polluted water environment in late March and early April 2023, causing more than 152 hectares of shrimp farming area to die, causing damage of over 50 billion VND.

Therefore, before entering the shrimp farming season this year, the Commune People's Committee allocated nearly 60 tons of Chloril supported by the State to shrimp farming households to treat the environment in the shrimp farming area. It recommended the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Vinh Linh District People's Committee and the District Irrigation Enterprise to strictly prohibit organizations and individuals from discharging waste into the environment to avoid water pollution on the Sa Lung River.

Mr. Quyet said that the new point of this year's farming season is that based on the province's general seed release schedule from March 15 to June 30, instead of requiring farmers to release seeds in a concentrated manner, the Commune People's Committee agreed to let community shrimp farming groups and cooperatives balance the seed release time of each region in a spread-out manner to ensure profits for shrimp farming households.

At the same time, shrimp farming households are advised to strictly implement technical measures, especially focusing on repairing banks, ponds, and renovating ponds according to the correct process; choosing quality, quarantined breeds. Farmers are encouraged to raise mixed species such as shrimp, crab, and fish. Synchronously implement measures to prevent and control aquatic diseases to minimize damage caused by diseases.

According to Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Huu Vinh, this is the main shrimp farming season of the year. To ensure the success of the farming season, the agricultural sector has issued a document requesting localities to focus on raising awareness and consciousness of shrimp disease prevention and control for shrimp farmers.

Especially regarding the quality of breeds, water treatment, sampling for disease monitoring and testing in breeding facilities, measures for disinfection, sterilization and handling when there is an epidemic in the facility, and building a disease-safe facility.

Shrimp farmers are advised to use quality, veterinary-quarantined seed; treat water supply and wastewater according to technical procedures; manage ponds well; supplement vitamins and minerals, use chemicals and biological products permitted for circulation to increase resistance for farmed shrimp and ensure a safe farming environment.

Strictly handle cases of arbitrary discharge and concealment of information about diseased shrimp, increasing the risk of disease spread.

“The agricultural sector is also directing specialized units to coordinate with localities to actively collect samples to monitor aquatic diseases at the beginning of the farming season to promptly warn people. Implementing the task of monitoring the brackish water shrimp farming environment to advise people to take water for aquaculture activities,” Mr. Vinh added.
