Highlights of the President's visit to Japan

President Vo Van Thuong's visit to Japan is meaningful and leaves an important mark, demonstrating the highly developed relationship between Vietnam and Japan.
President Vo Van Thuong and his wife successfully concluded their official visit to Japan from November 27-30 at the invitation of the Japanese Government. Responding to the results of the visit, Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son said that the visit was of great significance and significance, demonstrating the highly developed relationship between Vietnam and Japan. It can be summarized as “ important significance, comprehensive achievements, substantial content, and rich program ”. The visit took place at a time when Vietnam and Japan together celebrated the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations, and was the most prominent and important highlight in a series of about 500 commemorative events over the past year.

The visit had important and comprehensive results, in which the highlight was the two sides issuing a Joint Statement on upgrading the relationship to “Comprehensive Strategic Partnership for Peace and Prosperity in Asia and the World”. The Foreign Minister shared that the upgrade reflected the high level of political trust and maturity of the Vietnam-Japan relationship, opening a new period of more substantive and effective cooperation. The two sides reached high consensus on major and important orientations in the coming time, and signed five cooperation documents in energy transition, healthcare, enhancing law enforcement capacity at sea, space satellites, and cultural heritage. The Minister also said that the visit program was rich and comprehensive with nearly 40 main activities, demonstrating the trust and high attachment between the leaders, people, and localities of the two countries. The Japanese side gave the President and his wife a very respectful and special welcome. The Emperor and Empress of Japan hosted and had a warm and respectful reception with the President and his wife. The President had many meetings and discussions with leaders of the Royal Family, the Government, the National Assembly, and many socio-economic organizations, friendship associations, politicians, etc.; and attended with Japanese leaders and friends the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations solemnly held at the Meiji Imperial Guest House.

In particular, the President's speech at the Japanese National Assembly was the highlight of the visit. Through his speech, the President conveyed a message to the leaders and people of Japan about a reformed, open, peace-loving, development-aspiring Vietnam, about an independent, self-reliant, peaceful, cooperative, and developmental foreign policy... Regarding cooperation priorities in the coming time, Minister Bui Thanh Son said that the two countries need to focus on specifically implementing the framework of a comprehensive strategic partnership. In particular, continuing to strengthen political trust through maintaining annual high-level exchanges and contacts in many flexible forms on the Party, State, Government, and National Assembly channels. Vietnam and Japan need to strengthen economic ties; promote cooperation to ensure prosperity and economic security. Japan continues to support Vietnam in industrialization, modernization, building an independent and self-reliant economy; and continue to provide Vietnam with new-generation ODA. Japan creates conditions for Vietnamese enterprises to participate more deeply in the global supply chain of Japanese enterprises; promotes the implementation of large-scale, high-quality investment projects in Vietnam, including in the agricultural sector.

The two countries promote expanding cooperation in new areas such as semiconductors, innovation, technology transfer, digital transformation, and green transformation. Japan supports Vietnam in effectively implementing its commitments, including reducing net emissions to zero by 2050. Japan continues to support Vietnam in training high-quality human resources and training strategic-level officials. The two countries continue to coordinate closely at regional and international organizations and forums such as the United Nations, ASEAN, Mekong, APEC, etc. The Foreign Minister expressed his belief that within the framework of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, the Vietnam-Japan relationship will develop strongly and substantially in all areas, especially in the above-mentioned priority areas of cooperation.
