GĐXH - Having a history of diabetes, the man drank leaf juice with the intention of cooling and detoxifying his liver but had to be hospitalized because his liver enzymes were elevated.
According to information from Phu Tho General Hospital, the hospital’s Endocrinology – Diabetes Department continuously receives and treats dozens of patients with elevated liver enzymes due to drinking leaf juice at home. Notably, most of these cases have a history of diabetes and drink leaf juice with the purpose of cooling and detoxifying the liver.
One of them is patient Pham Ba T (63 years old), residing in Thanh Dinh commune, Viet Tri. The patient was admitted to the hospital in a state of extreme fatigue, loss of appetite, and abdominal pain.
Through medical history, it was found that this person had type 2 diabetes (5 years) and was taking diabetes medication. However, because he was worried that diabetes medication would affect liver function, he learned about and heard from an acquaintance that he should drink leaf juice (soybean leaf, black xạ, guava leaf...).
After nearly 1 month of drinking leaf water, the patient felt tired, had loss of appetite, was afraid of fat, and had abdominal pain, so he went to Phu Tho General Hospital for treatment.

At the Department of Endocrinology - Diabetes, after the doctors examined and performed the tests, the results showed: High blood sugar glucose = 7.54 mmol/l, HbA1c = 8.89%, high liver enzymes SGOT (AST) = 121.2 IU/L, SGPT (ALT) = 91.4 IU/L, GGT = 504 IU/L, total bilirubin = 17.3 mmol/l, direct bilirubin = 7.5 mmol/l, protein = 61 g/l, albumin = 33.1 g/l.
The patient was actively treated to control blood sugar and restore liver function. After 5 days, his health was stable, he was no longer tired, ate well, had no more chest tightness and was discharged from the hospital.
Similar to patient T, many other cases also had to be hospitalized due to high liver enzymes after a long period of drinking leaf water every day.
According to MSc. Dr. Duong Thi Kim Ngan (Head of the Department of Endocrinology - Diabetes), the medicinal effects of some types of leaves and medicinal herbs have been confirmed in medical literature. However, using leaves incorrectly or in the wrong dosage can lead to poisoning, and in more serious cases, can cause multiple organ failure.
It is worrying that people have the habit of drinking leaf water quite commonly, especially the elderly and those with chronic diseases. Improper abuse and incorrect dosage can be harmful to health, especially in cases of underlying diseases. Therefore, the use of leaves should be consulted and monitored by specialists to avoid unwanted complications.
Dr. Duong Thi Kim Ngan recommends that when people have health problems, they should go to a medical facility to be examined by a doctor and prescribed the right medicine and dosage. They should not arbitrarily use medicines or substitute products to avoid serious consequences.
During the treatment at home according to the doctor's prescription, the patient must strictly follow the principle of taking the correct dosage and time as instructed on the prescription and immediately notify medical staff if there are any unusual signs or if the condition becomes severe for timely treatment.
