Don't be subjective when you feel tired.

According to Dr. Nguyen Quang Bay, for people without diabetes, a little fatigue, whether on a normal day or on Tet, is not a cause for concern. However, diabetic patients must be alert to any abnormalities because they could be signs of complications, threatening to require hospitalization and "ruin Tet".

Therefore, there are some things diabetic patients need to do:

Firstly, as soon as you feel tired, especially very tired or tired with chest pain, fever, thirst... you need to immediately measure your blood pressure, capillary blood sugar and temperature.

Second, if you are just slightly tired and it is definitely due to working more than usual or staying up too late… then you should take some time to rest. You can cut down on some work or your spring travel schedule.

Third, if blood sugar is low

Fourth, if blood sugar is high > 14.0 mmol/L, you need to be alert for the risk of ketoacidosis. Patients should drink more water, rest, limit physical activity, and possibly inject another rapid insulin shot or increase the insulin dose (about 2 units) before the next meal. After that, patients also need to monitor their blood sugar more frequently.

Fifth, if fatigue is accompanied by fever, especially high fever, chills, or chest pain... these are symptoms of severe infection, and there is a risk of causing blood sugar disorders, even ketoacidosis, so patients should immediately contact their diabetes doctor or go to the nearest hospital. If there is a mild fever with a runny nose and cough, patients should lie down and rest, avoid going out in cold and windy places, and check their blood sugar regularly, eating and drinking normally.

Sixth, if blood pressure increases (> 140/90 mmHg), check to see if you have taken blood pressure medication. If not, you need to take it immediately as prescribed. If you have taken it, you can consider taking another pill or consult your doctor.

What should diabetic patients pay attention to in order to have a happy and safe Tet holiday?

Dr. Quang Bay recommends that diabetic patients should go for a medical examination before Tet, do tests to assess whether their blood sugar control is good or not, and ask for advice from their doctor about managing their disease. Patients should ask for and save the phone number of their treating doctor or the Endocrinology department of the hospital nearest to their home.

In addition, patients need to buy medicine (both diabetes medicine and cardiovascular medicine, blood lipid medicine...) at least 1 week more than expected, to have enough medicine when having to increase the dose during Tet holidays; Check the blood glucose meter, blood pressure monitor to see how the battery is, do they have enough needles and test strips?

Patients should also pay attention to working moderately and regularly, avoiding overexertion and staying up late. If you work or travel a lot, you need to eat more; you can take one more multivitamin pill a day; at the same time, consider getting vaccinated against influenza, pneumococcus, etc.

During Tet, diabetic patients should try to maintain their normal routine. It is very important to inject and take medications fully and on time. Note that diabetic medications (injections and/or oral) are usually taken before or after meals, not at a fixed time; eat enough meals and on time, absolutely avoid skipping meals even if you wake up late.

It is also important to measure blood sugar more often, maybe 2-4 times/day, even after meals, especially when eating a lot or eating strange foods.

When you find the food delicious and want to eat more, you can inject 1-2 units of fast-acting insulin before eating; Keep your body warm and drink enough water. You can drink wine, but limit drinking strong alcohol.

When going to church or traveling, wear comfortable, light, lace-up sneakers; check your feet regularly, especially for those who have peripheral neuropathy, numbness or loss of feeling in their feet. Contact your doctor immediately if you feel very tired.

"Patients should avoid excessive abstinence during Tet such as eating less, not daring to eat Tet feasts, and also avoid the idea of abstaining from going to the hospital even though they are very tired, have a high fever, or have severe hypoglycemia. Patients with diabetes should pay attention to keeping blood sugar before meals from 5.0-7.2 mmol/L (90-130 mg/dL), blood sugar after meals
