RIA Novosti sources said that agents of the Russian Federal Security Service (FSB) stopped a car loaded with explosives trying to enter Crimea. The bomb was defused.
Russia uncovers car bomb plot in Crimea.
The incident occurred at the Dzhankoy border crossing on the border between Crimea and Kherson.
During the inspection, FSB officers discovered "an object resembling an explosive device attached to the underside of the driver's seat," the source said.
Experts say the homemade explosive device was “assembled from foreign-made parts supplied to Ukraine by NATO countries.”
Russian security agencies have opened an investigation to identify those involved in the plot.
After the conflict between Russia and Ukraine broke out, the Crimean bridge was repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian missiles and drones.
In October 2022, a truck carrying explosives exploded while traveling along the bridge, killing three people and damaging the bridge. It took Russian authorities months to repair it. In July 2023, the bridge was attacked again by an unmanned boat, killing two people.
Recently, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said that the Crimean peninsula will become the biggest target in Kiev's military plan in 2024.
The Ukrainian leader said Kiev could intensify its attack on Crimea, "isolating" the peninsula by destroying the Kerch bridge connecting Crimea to mainland Russia. To achieve this goal, Mr. Zelensky once again requested aid for German-made Taurus long-range cruise missiles. However, Germany has so far refused to provide this type of missile even though France and the UK have provided Kiev with Storm Shadow missiles.
After a failed counteroffensive in the summer, President Zelensky recently announced plans to increase the number of troops by 500,000.
