(CLO) On December 3, the Kremlin criticized the United States for deciding to send an additional $725 million weapons package to Ukraine, saying the move showed that the outgoing administration of President Joe Biden was trying to increase tensions in the war in Ukraine.

In a statement on December 2, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the new aid package will include Stinger missiles, ammunition for the High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), drones and mines.

When asked about the aid package, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov replied: "The current US administration remains steadfast in its goal of not letting this war subside."

"The (Biden) administration is doing everything it can to add fuel to the fire. However, this aid package and others cannot change the course of events, cannot affect the momentum on the front lines."

The announcement from the US marks a significant increase from previous aid packages, with President Joe Biden recently using Presidential Release Authority (PDA), which allows the US to withdraw weapons from existing stockpiles to support allies in emergency situations.

Recent PDA aid packages have ranged from $125 million to $250 million. President Biden estimates that there is about $4 billion to $5 billion in PDA funds approved by Congress, which he plans to use to assist Ukraine before Republican President-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20.
