The Russian delegation included Chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee Grigory Karasin and Advisor to the Director of the Federal Security Service (FSB) Sergei Beseda. The US delegation was led by Senior Director at the US National Security Council Andrew Peek and senior State Department official Michael Anton, according to Russia's RIA news agency.
The two sides are expected to discuss a solution to the conflict in Ukraine and the Black Sea initiative. The White House said the goal of the talks is to achieve a maritime ceasefire in the Black Sea, allowing free shipping.
The meeting comes a week after Russian President Vladimir Putin and his US counterpart Donald Trump spoke by phone and agreed that “the peace process (for Ukraine) should begin with a ceasefire in the energy infrastructure, along with technical negotiations on the implementation of the ceasefire in the Black Sea, leading to a comprehensive ceasefire and permanent peace.” The two presidents stressed “the need to improve US-Russia bilateral relations.”
Regarding the previous US-Ukraine talks, Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov shared on social media that the latest round of dialogue was “effective and focused”.
Stressing that Kiev is working to realize the goal of “just and lasting peace”, he clarified: “We discussed important issues, including energy.”
For his part, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky positively assessed the results of the negotiations, confirming that his country's delegation had worked "in a completely constructive manner." However, he stressed that the key requirement was for President Putin to order a real end to the fighting.
