"USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) arrived in Pascagoula, Mississippi, today to begin modernization and technology upgrades, including the integration of the conventional strike weapon system," USNI News quoted a statement from the US Navy. "The upgrades will ensure Zumwalt remains one of the most technologically advanced and lethal ships in the US Navy," the statement said.
The destroyer USS Zumwalt arrived in Pascagoula on the afternoon of August 19 (US time), after leaving San Diego, California earlier this month.
The destroyer USS Zumwalt (DDG-1000) arrives at the Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula on August 19.
The USS Zumwalt arrives at Ingalls Shipyard to replace its existing Advanced Gun System (AGS) with four missile tubes. Each missile tube will hold three C-HGB hypersonic missiles, jointly developed by the US Army and the US Navy. A total of 12 C-HGBs are expected to be equipped on the USS Zumwalt.
The AGS was specifically designed for the Zumwalt class with the ability to fire 10 rounds per minute and use the Long Range Land Attack Projectile (LRLAP). However, the cost of each round of up to $1 million forced the US Navy to cancel this program in late 2016.
The US originally planned to build 32 Zumwalt-class ships but eventually reduced the number to just three. The remaining two are the USS Michael Monsoor (DDG-1001) and the USS Lyndon B. Johnson (DDG-1002). The US Navy also plans to upgrade these two ships.
The price of the USS Zumwalt is said to be between 3.5 and 4.4 billion USD, while the US Naval Sea Systems Command set the price of the USS Zumwalt at 3.87 billion USD, according to the Naval News website.
