The funding will support GlobalWafers in building a new manufacturing facility, a key step in strengthening the domestic U.S. semiconductor chip supply chain amid growing global competition.
The US Department of Commerce on December 17 announced a $406 million grant to GlobalWafers, a Taiwanese technology company, to expand silicon wafer production in Texas and Missouri.
This is an important step to strengthen the domestic US semiconductor chip supply chain in the context of increasing global competition.
The funding will support GlobalWafers in building a new manufacturing facility, creating 1,700 construction jobs and 880 manufacturing jobs.
GlobalWafers is investing $4 billion to build and expand facilities in Sherman, Texas, to produce silicon wafers used in advanced chipmaking, mature node chips and memory chips, and a new facility in St. Peters, Missouri, for silicon wafers used in defense and aerospace chips.
In particular, the project will also include the production of 300 mm diameter silicon wafers - an essential component for advanced chips, and the expansion of production of insulating silicon wafers.
These are the first high-volume silicon wafer manufacturing facilities in the US and are part of the Biden administration's strategy to reduce dependence on the semiconductor supply chain from East Asia, which currently produces about 90% of global silicon wafers.
GlobalWafers CEO Doris Hsu said localizing production would be advantageous as the global chip supply chain comes under pressure from tariffs. However, she noted that the company cannot rely entirely on domestic U.S. supplies and will have to import some raw materials and consumables.
Currently, five major companies, including GlobalWafers, control more than 80% of the global 300mm diameter silicon wafer production market, and about 90% of the silicon wafers are produced in East Asia.
The US Department of Commerce is moving quickly to approve grants under the $52.7 billion CHIPS and Science Act before President-elect Donald Trump takes office on January 20, 2025.
This is to ensure strategic projects like GlobalWafers' are implemented as planned, despite possible uncertainties under the new administration./.
