Messi has missed Inter Miami's last three matches, a total of four since the start of the 2024 season. As a result, the team chaired and co-owned by former football legend David Beckham has only won one, lost two and drawn one in this series of matches.
Messi is about to return to training and playing for Inter Miami
In between these matches, Messi, after being rested in the match against CF Montreal (lost 2-3 on March 11), returned to play to help Inter Miami win the second leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup round of 16 against Nashville SC with a score of 3-1 (5-3 on aggregate) on March 14. Since then, the Argentine star has been absent until now.
Without Messi, Inter Miami also suffered a shocking 0-4 loss to New York Red Bulls and just had a hard-fought 1-1 draw with New York City FC.
"Inter Miami showed a great dependence on Messi. When this famous player was absent, they often conceded goals, while the attack line did not make any expected mark. Veteran striker Suarez tried very hard, but still could not make up for the absence of Messi, who is considered the soul that leads the team's play," AS (Spain) commented.
"The good news for Inter Miami is that Messi has shown that he has fully recovered from the recent right hamstring injury. Coach Tata Martino's decision to keep the star player out of the match against New York City FC (March 31) is just a precaution. The Argentine coach wants to keep the star player for the more important match when Inter Miami hosts Monterrey in the first leg of the CONCACAF Champions Cup quarterfinals," AS shared.
Inter Miami is looking forward to the return of Messi (center) to lead the attack with Suarez every day.
"We will review Messi's condition again early this week, together with Nicolas Freire, to see if they are eligible to return to normal training and upcoming matches. We still have 3 to 4 days to make decisions. But our idea is that there is a high possibility that Messi will return to play," coach Tata Martino revealed, when talking to the American press about Messi's recent injury that has caused Inter Miami to perform poorly.
In MLS, Inter Miami is currently ranked 2nd in the Eastern Conference standings with 11 points after 7 matches. But the big and immediate goal of the team, chaired by former football star David Beckham, is to aim for the CONCACAF Champions Cup title to earn a place in the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
