Cherry blossoms bloom in the dry season of Da Lat

NDO - People in the mountain town of Da Lat, Lam Dong province and tourists were surprised when many cherry blossom trees suddenly bloomed in the heart of the dry season in the Central Highlands. Strange, surprising… but bringing many interesting things. In the middle of the dry season, we get to enjoy the flower that is the “messenger” of spring.

In mid-April, walking around some inner-city streets of Da Lat, such as: Tran Hung Dao, Ho Tung Mau, Pham Ngu Lao, Hung Vuong, Tran Phu... Or in the middle of the inner-city pine hills, many people enjoy watching and taking souvenir photos with "out of season" cherry blossoms.

While filming the cherry blossom season, Mr. Le Huu Phuoc (60 years old), who was born and raised in Da Lat, confidently said: “I have never seen this (cherry blossoms blooming in the dry season - PV). Maybe it is due to the impact of climate change?! But this strange thing has brought excitement to local people and tourists.”

Ms. Nguyen Nghia (49 years old, living in Ward 3, Da Lat city; the person taking the photo), a photographer who specializes in "hunting" for photos of cherry blossoms in the mountain town of Da Lat, shared: "Every year, when Langbiang plateau enters the cold and sunny season, usually in early spring, cherry blossoms bloom and show off their colors. This year, for the second time, I have been able to admire and "hunt" for photos of this romantic pink-purple flower."

Along with the residents of Da Lat, on the roads filled with purple and pink flowers, many public spaces in the highland city, many tourists enjoy taking souvenir photos. "My friends and I often make a date to go to Da Lat during the cherry blossom season in early spring. This February, we missed our date with this flower, but now we have an interesting experience," said Ms. Tran Le Ha, from Khanh Hoa province.

Having been attached to this sublime land, the city of cherry blossoms, the city of love for nearly 30 years, I often enjoy and admire this capricious flower "like the rosy lips of the person I love" that blooms in early spring, late December or from January to February, depending on the weather every year.

This year, many cherry blossom areas from the center to the outskirts of Da Lat are not as colorful as many years ago. Especially the cherry blossom areas around Xuan Huong Lake, Tran Hung Dao Street... make many people regret. Suddenly, at the end of the dry season in the Central Highlands, when the weather begins to change seasons. The sun is dry, the sky is deep blue, the cherry blossoms bloom again, showing their colors. The mountain town of Da Lat is more vibrant when welcoming the footsteps of travelers admiring the cherry blossoms.

“In mid-April, Da Lat is filled with pink. Strange, so strange!”, many people admiring the cherry blossoms exclaimed.

According to some documents, cherry blossom has the scientific name prunus cerasoides, rose family (rosaceae), plum genus (prunus), cherry subgenus (cerasus). Cherry blossom is cited as "prunus cerasoides D. Don". D. Don is David Don (1799-1841), a Scottish botanist, considered to be the first person to classify and describe cherry blossom in the book written in Latin Prodromus florae nepalensis (Flowers collected in Nepal) published in London in 1825.

Many researchers believe that cherry blossoms are common in East Asia, places with altitudes above 1,000m.

Many people in Da Lat call this flower tree “mai” meaning “apricot”, “apricot”. Perhaps, because this is a plant species belonging to the plum and apricot genus and the cherry subgenus, but has single five-petal flowers like apricot flowers. Later, this flower species “both peach and apricot” was called “apricot cherry”?!

Putting aside the “origin” of this flower, once again in 2024, many people will be “intoxicated” with the dream of peach blossoms. Admiring the romantic pink-purple flowers in the melody: “Whoever goes to the land of peach blossoms, don’t forget to follow the flower path/The flower flies to the hesitant person, then the flower follows someone…”.

Along with the "strange story" of cherry blossoms blooming in late spring, currently in the highland city of Da Lat, many royal poinciana trees (red phoenix flowers) are also competing to light up the deep blue sky.

The summer herald flower, the student flower often pressed into yearbook pages, blooms early, making many hearts flutter. Passing by schools, public spaces… it seems like summer has come.

This year, Da Lat brings many interesting things to local residents and tourists. The time of preparing to change from spring to summer, being immersed in the colors of cherry blossoms, purple and red phoenix flowers. It is truly a strange thing in the city of thousands of flowers, Da Lat.
