Accelerating actions to realize gender equality goals

On International Women's Day, March 8, United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called on the international community to increase action to protect and promote the rights of "women".

Speaking at the United Nations headquarters in New York, Mr. Guterres said this year marks the 30th anniversary of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action - the most far-reaching roadmap for women's rights adopted at the United Nations World Conference on Women in China in 1995.

Since then, countries have made significant progress on women’s rights, but progress remains fragile. On International Women’s Day, Mr. Guterres called on the world to listen to the voices of “half the world” and accelerate practical actions to realize the goal of gender equality and the vision of the Beijing Declaration for all women and girls around the world.

The UN Secretary-General said that violence, discrimination and economic inequality against women remain intractable. He condemned gender stereotypes and discrimination that threaten women’s rights globally. “We cannot stand idly by while progress is reversed. We must act,” he stressed.

According to the report “Reviewing Women's Rights 30 Years After the Beijing Declaration” by UN Women (the United Nations specialized agency for gender equality and women's empowerment), over the past decade, the number of women and girls living in conflict has increased by 50% - a worryingly high level.

Data shows that only 87 countries have ever been led by women, and every 10 minutes a woman or girl is murdered by a partner or family member. Digital technology and artificial intelligence (AI) are spreading harmful stereotypes, while gender gaps already limit women’s opportunities.

According to the report, while significant progress has been made in some areas since the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing, such as girls' education, maternal mortality and women's representation in parliament, the world still needs to make significant efforts to achieve gender equality and move closer to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

With the new “Beijing+30 Agenda for Action,” UN Women has launched a six-point action plan to tackle gender inequality: a digital revolution for all women and girls, freedom from poverty, elimination of violence against women and girls, full and equal decision-making, peace and security, and climate justice.

Responding to the United Nations' call to protect "women", many countries and regions have announced a roadmap for women's rights to build a long-term gender equality policy, promoting their participation in the political, economic and social fields.

The European Commission (EC) has just officially published the Women's Rights Roadmap and Gender Equality Report 2025, reflecting the European Union's (EU) strong commitment to the rights of women and girls, thereby creating a fairer and more equal society.

The EU’s 2020-2025 initiatives have made great strides, but progress towards gender equality in the EU remains slow and uneven across sectors and Member States. In particular, one-third of women in the EU still experience physical or sexual violence.

The EC’s Roadmap for Women’s Rights sets out key targets to reduce gender discrimination and promote gender equality across a range of areas. Among the most important are ending gender-based violence, improving the quality of health care for women, and ensuring access to health and reproductive health services.

On the economic front, the roadmap aims to narrow the wage gap between men and women, improve financial literacy for women and girls, and encourage the sharing of family care responsibilities between women and men...

Along with the implementation of the above-mentioned “Women’s Rights Roadmap”, the voices of women - “half the world” need to be heard more. In addition, global education needs to aim at promoting gender equality at all levels of education, thereby building a solid foundation for ensuring fair representation of women in political bodies and all aspects of social life.
