Pomegranates contain polyphenol antioxidants that reduce inflammation, which is beneficial in controlling conditions in type 2 diabetes.

Pomegranates contain antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties. Pomegranate juice is beneficial for people with inflammatory diseases, diabetes, and other health problems. The fruit may also improve digestion and memory, help prevent cancer, and reduce insulin resistance. The vitamin C in pomegranates acts as an antioxidant, which may benefit people with type 2 diabetes. Other compounds may also reduce fasting blood sugar levels.

According to research from the Jordan University of Science and Technology, pomegranate components (peel, seeds, flowers) and pomegranate juice can reduce oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation, metabolic processes associated with type 2 diabetes. This effect occurs because the chemical components in pomegranate directly neutralize the reactive oxygen species produced, increasing certain antioxidant enzyme activities.

Punicic acid in pomegranate, methanolic extract from seeds and peel extract can reduce fasting blood sugar levels. Other compounds in pomegranate such as punicalagin; ellagic, gallic, oleanolic, ursolic and uallic acids have anti-diabetic effects. The sugar part of this fruit juice has polyphenol antioxidants (tannins and anthocyanins) that reduce inflammation, which is beneficial in controlling conditions in type 2 diabetes.

Research from the University of Sydney (Australia) found that using methanol extract from pomegranate flowers (500 mg daily) for 6 weeks can inhibit the increase in glucose concentration, improve insulin sensitivity. This shows that pomegranate flower extract can act against diabetes.

Pomegranate flower extract contains gallic acid, which has PPAR-activating properties. PPAR-alpha is involved in the regulation of fatty acid uptake and oxidation, inflammation, and vascular function. PPAR-gamma is involved in fatty acid uptake and storage, glucose homeostasis, and inflammation. Therefore, PPARs are key regulators of lipid and glucose metabolism. The researchers concluded that the dual PPAR-alpha/-gamma activating properties of pomegranate flowers have the potential to treat diabetes and its associated complications. This activation also reduces inflammation and improves hyperglycemia, which is beneficial in diabetes management.

Research by Rimonest Company Limited (Israel) also shows that pomegranate flowers, seeds and juice contain substances with hypoglycemic activity. Pomegranate flowers and juice can bind gamma-gamma activating peroxisome proliferator receptors and producing nitric oxide to help prevent diabetic complications. Compounds in pomegranate including oleanolic, ursolic and gallic acids also have antidiabetic effects.

Diabetics can drink pomegranate juice for the purpose of controlling blood sugar and managing the disease. According to the US Department of Agriculture, an average 280g pomegranate contains about 39g of sugar, which can be consumed by diabetics to keep their glucose levels within the permissible limits. Diabetics should consult their doctor before using any pomegranate extract supplement.
