Many women believe in cosmetics that are advertised to give them perfect skin instantly. However, after a period of use, their skin becomes weaker, serious problems appear, and they have to go to the hospital for treatment.

This information was shared by Master, Doctor Phan Ngoc Huy - Department of Dermatology, Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital - in a discussion on International Women's Day, March 8, organized by Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital on March 6.

Talking to Tuoi Tre Online , Dr. Huy said that the cosmetic dermatology department regularly receives many cases of women and men having skin problems after using cosmetics of unknown origin that are widely advertised online. Initially, the skin can improve significantly, but after a while, the skin becomes thin, dry, easily irritated, has pustules and many erythemas.

Dr. Huy warns that many skin whitening, melasma treatment or instant skin tightening creams actually contain corticosteroids and heavy metals such as lead and mercury. These ingredients bring quick results but have the potential to cause serious consequences for the skin and health.

Specifically, corticosteroids help whiten and smooth the skin, reduce acne after just a few days, but if used for a long time, it will cause skin atrophy, dilated capillaries, blisters, and even make the skin dependent, easily causing flare-ups when stopped using.

Lead and mercury are often found in whitening creams of unknown origin. Lead accumulates over time, causing dull skin and pigmentation disorders, while mercury can cause poisoning, kidney failure, and nerve damage if used for a long time.

"The nature of these products is often not guaranteed quality, containing ingredients that are harmful to the skin. After about 1-2 months of use, many people notice unusual signs and seek medical attention. In some cases, treatment lasts for many months to help the skin recover to its original state," Dr. Huy emphasized.

Also on March 6, Ho Chi Minh City Dermatology Hospital provided free skin examination and consultation to more than 100 women.

How to identify mixed creams and cosmetics containing toxic substances

According to experts, consumers can identify poor quality cosmetics through some signs such as:

The cream is opaque white, pale yellow or pale pink in color, with an unusually soft and smooth texture.

No clear label, no full ingredients, no certification from health authorities.
