On May 9, the 32nd SEA Games Athletics Organizing Committee suddenly changed the competition schedule, causing difficulties for Vietnamese athlete Nguyen Thi Oanh.
According to the original schedule, Nguyen Thi Oanh competed in the 5,000m, 1,500m and 3,000m steeplechase events on 3 different days. However, just a few hours before the competition, the 32nd SEA Games Organizing Committee suddenly changed the athletics competition schedule for today. Notably, Nguyen Thi Oanh had to compete for the gold medal in just 20 minutes.
Specifically, according to the latest competition schedule, Nguyen Thi Oanh will compete in the 1,500m event at 5:30 p.m. on May 9. Then, at 5:50 p.m., Nguyen Thi Oanh will enter the more difficult event of the 3,000m obstacle course.
According to calculations, the runner from Bac Giang took about 4 minutes to complete 1,500m. She only had time to change clothes, put on her number for the 3,000m obstacle course and had to go to the waiting room immediately.
This is a huge challenge for Nguyen Thi Oanh and she will have to try her best to defend her two gold medals today. The 3,000m hurdles is the most difficult event, because it combines running and jumping over barriers.
Despite the difficult content, Nguyen Thi Oanh has won 2 gold medals and broken 2 records in the last 2 SEA Games. The best result of the athlete from Bac Giang is 9 minutes 52 seconds 44.
According to the initial target, Nguyen Thi Oanh was responsible for winning 3 gold medals in the 1,500m, 3,000m hurdles and 5,000m events.
General Secretary of the Vietnam Athletics Federation Nguyen Manh Hung said that the coaching board will have appropriate measures to help Nguyen Thi Oanh complete the set goals.
