(BGDT) - Le Quang Vinh (born in 2005), a 12A1 student at Luc Ngan High School No. 3 (Bac Giang) is known not only for his excellent academic performance but also for his talent in carving artistic paintings on leaves.

Since childhood, Vinh has shown a passion for sculpture. Seeing his skillful hands and soulful paintings, teachers praised him. When he was in 10th grade at Luc Ngan High School No. 3, Vinh was always enthusiastic in participating in collective movements, impressing teachers and friends in wall newspaper making sessions, extracurricular activities in class and in the block with beautiful paintings, graceful and sophisticated lines.

At the end of 2021, Vinh accidentally saw sculptures by foreign artists on materials such as leaves, fabric, paper, etc. on YouTube. Vinh was "hypnotized", looking at them for a long time and wondering if he could do the same. He researched and decided to experiment on leaves.

To get the materials, Vinh first looked for leaves that were not too thin and not too thick, and could be preserved for a long time. After a period of research and experimentation, Vinh discovered that using jackfruit leaves or bodhi leaves to carve the picture was the most suitable.

He chose young leaves, dried them in the shade, then wrapped them up and stored them in a cupboard as raw materials for his work. At first, Vinh practiced carving basic strokes, tearing the leaves many times and having to throw them away. Undaunted, with his passion and skillful hands, the student was determined to turn the lifeless leaves into vivid, unique paintings.

Without much fuss, Vinh’s creative tools are a paper cutter and a fruit carving knife. Every time he starts carving a picture, Vinh will print or sketch the content of the sample picture on paper. Then, he will stick the sample picture on the leaf, meticulously and gently using the knife to trace each line until he creates a complete picture. For available color photos, it is more complicated, he has to reprocess the photo to the traditional black and white color scheme to get sharpness, then sketch the content of the photo on paper. It takes about 3-4 hours to create a leaf sculpture. The most elaborate work takes nearly 24 hours to complete.

In the early days, when he had no experience, each completed leaf painting was displayed in the study corner or pressed in books as a souvenir. Not long after, the leaf paintings became moldy and deformed. Later, Vinh had his work laminated for long-term preservation. Up to now, the student’s collection of leaf paintings is diverse with nearly 1,000 paintings of all kinds. The most impressive are the portraits of President Ho Chi Minh, General Vo Nguyen Giap; landscapes, animals, etc.

According to Le Quang Vinh, the most difficult part is carving portraits of leaders. Therefore, he spends time carefully observing the characters' expressions before starting to practice. In addition, landscape paintings are also a challenge for the young man because of the many complex details, the smaller the details, the more meticulous and careful the carving on the leaves must be.

At first, Vinh carved paintings on leaves to give to friends and relatives and posted them on social networks to share his passion. At that time, many people who loved Vinh's sculptures contacted him to ask to buy or send sample paintings for his talented student to help carve. Although many people asked to buy, Quang Vinh initially carved leaf paintings to satisfy his passion, the products he made were mainly for giving to friends and loved ones. From the initial success of carving paintings on jackfruit leaves, Le Quang Vinh is planning to experiment with other types of leaves and some specialty fruits of Luc Ngan such as oranges, grapefruits, and lychees.

Ms. Nguyen Thi Thu Huong, homeroom teacher of class 12A1, commented: "In addition to his talent for leaf carving, Le Quang Vinh is also a good student, good at all subjects, and responsible for the work of the group." Having worked in the education sector for nearly 20 years and been Vinh's homeroom teacher for 3 years, Ms. Huong shared her joy when receiving a small gift from her student on the occasion of Vietnam Teachers' Day.

“It is a beautiful landscape painting carved on leaves and carefully laminated. I will always keep that souvenir painting on my desk,” Ms. Huong shared.

At this time, Le Quang Vinh is focusing on studying and preparing for the high school graduation exam. The student plans to apply to some schools with mechanical or architectural majors to satisfy his passion for creativity to serve life.
