Today, May 18, surgeons from Tan Trieu K Hospital (Thanh Tri District, Hanoi) had a discussion, exchange and share experiences in treating kidney cancer with experts from the University of London (UK).
On this occasion, British experts, along with Deputy Director of K Hospital Pham Van Binh and the surgical team, demonstrated laparoscopic surgery using the Xi generation Davinci Robot system to treat kidney cancer on a 48-year-old male patient.
The surgery was broadcast live from the operating room to the auditorium with the presence of surgeons from hospitals in the northern region. Experts discussed and exchanged ideas on how to handle difficult situations in laparoscopic surgery for kidney cancer.
Experts at K Hospital said that most kidney tumors have no symptoms. Previously, most kidney tumor patients came to the doctor when the tumor was already very large. Nowadays, with the development of technology, kidney cancer patients are increasingly detected earlier.
In the above patient, the CT scan results showed that the patient had a right kidney tumor measuring about 5 cm with typical images of a malignant tumor. Diagnostic methods determined that the patient had right kidney cancer, stage 1b. The patient's kidney tumor was discovered during a routine health check.
Notably, on the CT scan, the patient had anatomical changes (the kidney had 2 arteries compared to normal people who only had arteries), so the treatment of the renal pedicle area was more difficult.
The patient underwent radical nephrectomy. After 2 hours, the surgery was successful and he continued to be monitored and treated at K Hospital.
Latest technology
According to Pham Van Binh, Deputy Director of K Hospital, open surgery has been used to treat kidney cancer for a long time. However, with this method, the recovery process is longer, the pain is more, and after surgery there is a long, unaesthetic scar.
"As the newest and most modern method today, robotic surgery for treating kidney cancer and urinary cancer has many advantages, because it allows doctors to observe clearly; the high flexibility of the robotic arms helps surgeons operate with greater precision," said the Deputy Director of K Hospital.
Robotic surgery has many outstanding advantages, which are ensuring aesthetics, minimal trauma, maximum pain relief and quick recovery. In particular, many studies show that robotic surgery has a lower rate of accidents and complications than conventional endoscopic surgery in the treatment of urological diseases.
The da Vinci Xi robot is currently the most advanced generation of robots used at K Hospital. Previously, from 2021, cases of head and neck and gynecological diseases treated with robotic surgery were performed at K Hospital.
