Khanh Hoa establishes Department of Fisheries, Sea and Islands

(NLDO) - Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee has just issued Decision No. 709 on the establishment of the Department of Fisheries, Seas and Islands under the Department of Agriculture and Environment.

The Department of Fisheries, Sea and Islands was established on the basis of the merger between: the Department of Fisheries, the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Product Quality Management under the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Department of Sea and Islands under the Department of Natural Resources and Environment (before the arrangement to establish the Department of Agriculture and Environment).

The Department of Fisheries, Seas and Islands receives the functions, tasks, powers, personnel, and related documents from the Department of Fisheries and the Department of Seas and Islands; and at the same time receives the functions, tasks, powers, personnel, and related documents on food safety in the fisheries sector from the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Product Quality Management.

The remaining tasks of the Department of Agricultural, Forestry and Fishery Product Quality Management will be assigned to the Department of Rural Development and Science and Technology under the Department of Agriculture and Environment.

Khanh Hoa currently has a fleet of more than 3,400 fishing vessels, of which 643 are 15 meters or longer and specialize in offshore fishing.

In 2024, the total aquatic product output of the province will reach 125,750 tons, an increase of 4.3% compared to 2023. Of which, the output of exploited aquatic products will reach 104,180 tons, the output of farmed aquatic products will reach 22,570 tons, an increase of 21% compared to the previous year.

Meanwhile, the total aquaculture area in Khanh Hoa is nearly 4,300 hectares. Lobster is the key marine farming species of the province. The whole province has 4 farming areas: Van Ninh, Ninh Hoa, Nha Trang and Cam Ranh with a total of 99,790 cages and an output of 3,300 tons.

Khanh Hoa also has strengths in seafood processing and export with 64 seafood production and processing establishments certified by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (now the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment ). Khanh Hoa's seafood export products are present in 64 markets around the world. Seafood export turnover always accounts for 35% - 44% of the province's export value, making Khanh Hoa one of the 5 strongest seafood exporting provinces in the country.
