The Colombian women's team (ranked 25th in the world) is rated higher than Jamaica (ranked 43rd in the world) before the round of 16 of the 2023 Women's World Cup. However, Jamaica was the team that took the initiative and almost created a surprise with a shot over the bar by player Jody Brown in the 3rd minute.
Despite controlling the ball better, the Colombian women's players had a hard time dominating the game against Jamaica - a team that played a strong defensive counter-attacking style. However, in the 51st minute, the Colombian women's team converted their opportunity into a goal. 18-year-old center back Guzman Zapata crossed the ball into the penalty area for Catalina Usme to control the ball well in the first step, eliminating the Jamaican defender before finishing past the Jamaican goalkeeper.
After conceding the goal, the Jamaican women's team rose up strongly. In the 55th minute, from a cross from a teammate into the penalty area, goalkeeper Catalina Perez failed to catch the ball. Immediately, substitute player Atlanta Primus headed the ball close to the goal, hitting the Colombian goal post. After that, the South American team counterattacked, Caicedo Alegria accelerated and entered the penalty area. Unfortunately, in a one-on-one situation, the player known as the "child prodigy" of Colombian women's football, Caicedo Alegria, could not defeat the Jamaican goalkeeper.

In the final minutes of the match, the Jamaican women's team tried to put pressure on. In the 82nd minute, receiving a cross from his teammate on the right wing, Drew Spence headed the ball just past the Colombian women's goal post. Just 5 minutes later, the Colombian women's team responded dangerously. From a cross from his teammate, Santos Herrera comfortably headed the ball, hitting the Jamaican goal post and bouncing out.
In the end, the Colombian women's team beat Jamaica 1-0 to advance to the quarterfinals and will face the England women's team. This is the first time in history that the Colombian women's team has reached the quarterfinals of a World Cup. Previously, the best achievement of Colombian women's football was reaching the round of 16 of the 2015 Women's World Cup.
