The Telegraph reported that a full statement from the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) on the morning of October 1 stated: "Following a political decision, a few hours ago, the IDF began a targeted and clearly demarcated ground operation in southern Lebanon targeting Hezbollah targets and infrastructure, in several villages near the border, which pose a direct and real threat to Israeli settlements on the northern border."
Previously, AFP news agency reported that on September 30, the US State Department confirmed that Israel was conducting limited military operations against Hezbollah forces inside Lebanon.
Speaking at a press conference, US State Department spokesman Matthew Miller said: "Israel has informed us that they are conducting limited operations targeting Hezbollah infrastructure near the border area."
Israel's Ynet news portal quoted several ministers in Israel's war cabinet on the same day as saying they condemned the US for "leaking information about troop movements" after Washington received updates on the matter from Israel.
Earlier, the Israeli army declared a part of the territory along the border with Lebanon a closed military zone. At the same time, the media reported that Israeli forces were carrying out heavy artillery fire on the Lebanese border areas and that the army had withdrawn from some positions in the south of the country.
On the same day, a field source in Lebanon said that Israeli Air Force aircraft attacked several targets in the southern suburbs of Beirut, including the neighborhoods of Laylaki and Borj El Brajneh. There is a possibility of "another series of airstrikes".
Meanwhile, AFP reported that US President Joe Biden expressed opposition to Israel's ground campaign in Lebanon.
Asked about Israel's plans for a limited attack on Lebanon, President Biden said: "I'm more aware than you probably know and I'm pleased they're holding off. We should hold off now."
On the same day, the United Nations announced its opposition to Israel's planned ground attack on Lebanon. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' spokesman Stephane Dujarric said he "does not want to see any" ground attack.
