Indonesia is considering introducing artificial intelligence (AI) and coding as elective subjects in schools to help students approach social development issues and improve their technology skills, Primary and Secondary Education Minister Abdul Mu'ti said on November 14.
According to Mr. Abdul Mu'ti, the ministry is still considering implementing subjects on AI and coding from grade 4. However, teaching will start in schools with sufficient facilities and necessary conditions.
He said that although the AI and coding teaching model has been tested in some schools in the capital Jakarta, it has not been widely applied across the country.
"As the world continues to change and requires the ability to respond to future challenges, equipping people with technology skills must start at an early age," he stressed.
Abdul Mu'ti also expressed hope that the AI and coding teaching trial could be rolled out in the new school year.
Previously, Indonesian Vice President Gibran Rakabuming Raka called on the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education to continue introducing AI and coding subjects in primary and secondary schools. This is part of the strategy to train modern human resources, aiming to prepare Indonesia's golden generation of 2045 with experts in the fields of AI, coding and automation.
