Mountain students conquer math with handheld calculators

200 students competed in the final round of the “Maths on Handheld Calculators” contest, many of whom came from schools in remote areas.

Mua Thi Trang, a 6th grade student at Khun Hang Secondary School, Khun Hang Commune, Tam Duong District, Lai Chau Province, traveled nearly 400km to participate in the final round of the “Maths on Handheld Calculators” contest. This was the first time Trang and her friends had been to the capital.

Trang shared: “I am very proud today to be one of 200 contestants participating in the final round of the Handheld Calculator Math Competition. This competition helps me improve my knowledge and skills in using a handheld calculator to solve math problems faster.

Although we live far away and our economic conditions are still difficult, through online competitions and direct organization like this, we realize that there is no longer much of a gap between students from the mountainous and lowland areas. We have access to technology to improve ourselves and greatly support our studies."

The Final Round of the ENMATH Competition was co-organized by Thanh Chuong Company Limited (ERAS Vietnam) and Vietnam National Academy of Agriculture on March 22 and 23 at Vietnam National Academy of Agriculture.

The contest is an intellectual playground for middle school and high school students nationwide with the aim of promoting the movement and passion for mathematics, as well as helping them discover new features of current generations of handheld calculators, especially ERAS models; thereby, promoting the movement and quality of mathematics learning, contributing to training human resources for the digital age, for the 4th industrial revolution that is taking place strongly and widely.

Mr. Bui Khanh Linh, a Math teacher at Tam Nong High School in Phu Tho Province, said that the school had 5 students who made it to the final round. Mr. Linh assessed that this was a useful playground that helped students love Math more. In addition, using computers helps the calculation process go faster, training students to do math more accurately.

This is the first year that the Vietnam Academy of Agriculture has coordinated to organize "Math Competition on Handheld Calculators" with the participation of teams from 25 provinces and cities, including many students from mountainous areas.

Mr. Nguyen Cong Tiep, Deputy Director of Vietnam Agricultural Academy, acknowledged the efforts of the students who did not mind the long distance to the Academy to participate in the competition.

“Mathematics, like Philosophy, is the science of sciences. We consider this a meaningful competition in the development of basic sciences such as Mathematics. Organizing a math competition not only helps students gain more knowledge and skills in Mathematics but also instills a passion for Mathematics in generations of students.

We hope that the competition will be a place to find future red seeds to train high-quality human resources for the country, especially in the context of strong digital transformation like today," said Mr. Tiep.

Mr. Phan Van Cuong, Director of Thanh Chuong Company Limited, the sponsor of the contest, said: "In parallel with production and business activities, the company always has charity activities, sponsors contests, and creates useful playgrounds for students."

The contest results had 5 students winning first prizes, each worth 10 million VND, and 13 students winning second prizes, each worth 8 million VND.

Connecting businesses is an activity that Vietnam National Academy of Agriculture gives special priority to promoting. The Academy has cooperated with more than 200 businesses in training, practice, internship as well as recruiting students after graduation.

Every year, the Academy organizes a Job Fair with the participation of 60 to 100 businesses , solving the needs of internships and jobs for 4,000 to 5,000 students. According to the survey results, over 97% of students find jobs after graduation in state agencies, political organizations, socio-political organizations, businesses or start their own businesses.
