In the process of building new rural areas, agricultural extension plays an important role in transferring scientific and technological advances, promoting agricultural production, and developing the rural economy. As a bridge to implement policies of the Party, the State, and the province; transferring scientific research results to farmers and market information, in recent years, the Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center has supported many localities in building production models, converting crop and livestock structures, organic agricultural production... bringing positive results, creating good income for farmers.

Mo O commune, Dakrong district is a mountainous area with many difficulties in agricultural production. In order to support local people in building new production models, as the sponsor of Mo O commune in the process of building a new rural area, in 2024, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center deployed agricultural production models in the commune based on local strengths such as: biosafety model of raising native broilers on biological bedding; agroforestry model; fruit orchards; training to improve the capacity of community agricultural extension teams.
The center has supported plant varieties, livestock, fertilizers, and feed for farmers to implement models such as: supporting 2 livelihood gardens with green-skinned Thai jackfruit, red-fleshed Rubi guava, and four-season lemon; implementing a combined agroforestry model with a scale of 2.1 hectares. For the indigenous chicken farming model, the center supported 900 indigenous Ri chickens for 10 households. Currently, after 5 months of raising, the average weight of the chicken flock is 1.7 kg/chicken, with a selling price of 100,000 VND/kg, after deducting all costs, each household earns a profit of 5 million VND.
The implementation of production models and the transfer of scientific and technological advances in Mo O commune has contributed to changing people's awareness of intensive production using indigenous breeds for high economic efficiency. The use of indigenous breeds has the advantage of making the most of local food sources and existing land for development, increasing the proportion of livestock in agricultural production, promoting sustainable development of the agricultural and rural economy.
Through the implementation of the model, production households in the commune learn and replicate, thereby creating jobs, increasing income for people, contributing to completing the targets for building new rural areas of the locality. In Dakrong district, in addition to Mo O commune, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center also supports Trieu Nguyen and Ba Long communes with agricultural production models, training and transferring techniques to members of community agricultural extension groups and key farmers. Currently, the center's technical staff continues to provide technical guidance to people so that the center's support models are highly effective and have good replication.
The Agricultural Extension Center's support for communes in building new rural areas in terms of production models is to effectively implement economic criteria and production organization. To effectively carry out this task, the center has closely followed key agricultural production development programs and goals, taken advantage of central programs and projects, successfully transferred many new technical advances, contributed to rapidly increasing productivity and product quality, promoting sustainable agricultural production, ensuring economic, social and environmental protection efficiency.
Outstanding programs and models include: raising safe organic pigs for meat linked to product consumption; intensive cattle farming, cattle herd improvement program; organic rice production linked to product consumption; intensive fruit tree cultivation following VietGap direction, growing indigenous dwarf bananas; converting water-deficient rice land to growing other crops; raising climbing fish in cages, intensive 2-phase whiteleg shrimp farming, raising whales in ponds; intensive afforestation of large timber trees; building forestry nurseries applying improved technology; coastal livelihood models... bringing high efficiency, increasing income, improving life, protecting the environment.
Along with building models for transferring technical advances, the center has increased the organization of training courses for grassroots agricultural extension officers and key farmers; organized information and propaganda activities for people to understand and follow. Thanks to that, the production level of the people has been raised to a new level, and production efficiency has also been higher and more sustainable.
Director of Quang Tri Agricultural Extension Center Tran Can said: Agricultural extension activities have contributed to the development of household economy, improving the lives of farmers and fishermen in coastal areas, plains, midlands, mountainous areas, especially ethnic minorities in remote areas. With the attention and leadership of Party committees and authorities at all levels, the agricultural extension system from the provincial to grassroots levels has operated stably, bringing many benefits and efficiency, contributing to changing the economic life of the people. From there, it has contributed to helping localities successfully complete the targets on income and production organization in building new rural areas.
In the coming time, the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center will continue to innovate the content and methods of agricultural extension activities, meeting the requirements of shifting thinking from agricultural production to agricultural economics; closely coordinate with departments, branches and localities to effectively implement national target programs, focusing on the new rural program.
In particular, focusing on promoting the transfer of technical advances, information and propaganda, vocational training for rural workers; implementing programs and projects to promote advanced and modern agricultural technology; strengthening linkages along the value chain, connecting agricultural product consumption markets; promoting the application of science and technology in production; actively transforming the structure of crops and livestock; implementing intensive farming and improving fruit trees in mountainous and midland areas associated with linking product consumption; promoting the construction of biosafety and disease-safe livestock models; continuing to implement large-scale timber afforestation programs; promoting new farming models, raising specialty aquatic species, and raising according to VietGAP. Continuing to propagate and disseminate technical innovations, raise awareness among people, helping to change thinking in production.
