The reigning VBA champion, Saigon Heat, has just announced its farewell to American coach Matt Van Pelt: “Saigon Heat would like to send our sincere and deep thanks to Coach Matt Van Pelt. He has been with the team for over 4 years and together with the club and Vietnamese basketball, created many memorable historical milestones. For Saigon Heat, what this coach has contributed is much more than titles. He will always be a great part of the Saigon Heat family.”

In addition to the special gratitude, the VBA champion team in the last 4 seasons also revealed the new destination of the talented young expert is the Australian professional basketball league (NBL1) and the club he leads is Goldfield Giants.
Matt Van Pelt was born in 1991 and started working as an assistant coach at Saigon Heat Club at VBA 2020. In VBA 2021, Matt Van Pelt took on the role of head coach for the first time and was trusted until the end of VBA 2023. In addition to his success with Saigon Heat, Coach Matt Van Pelt also made his mark when he led the Vietnamese men's basketball team to win a historic silver medal at SEA Games 31 in the 3x3 event.

NBL1 is a large-scale tournament with the participation of 74 teams from 5 regions including Central, East, West, South and North of Australia. Goldfield Giants Club is located in the Western region and will compete with 13 other teams.

Facing a new challenge in the land of kangaroos, the students who have been with Coach Matt Van Pelt for many years at Saigon Heat sent their best wishes for success and luck to the talented and passionate young coach for Vietnamese basketball. “Coach Matt Van Pelt is one of the greatest coaches I have ever worked with and learned from. I wish him a lucky future. I will always welcome him back,” said defender Le Quang. “Thank you, Coach Matt Van Pelt, for leading the Saigon Heat team. I hope he has a lot of luck in Australia. He has taught me so much both on and off the court,” shared Tim Waale, captain of the Saigon Heat club.
