After nearly 4 months of competition, the 8th season of the Vietnam professional basketball tournament VBA 2023 has just ended, marking the maturity of domestic players. “This year's season, domestic players have developed remarkably. They have approached the level of Vietnamese players. Throughout the VBA 2023 season, there have been domestic players who have played important roles, even shining to bring victory to their teams. Previously, foreign players or players of Vietnamese origin often spoke up at key moments of the match, but now domestic players have done it,” said coach Le Tran Minh Nghia, a former member of the coaching staff of the Vietnam basketball team.

Mr. Hoang The Vinh, an analyst at the 2023 VBA basketball tournament, agrees with coach Le Tran Minh Nghia and adds: “This year, many young players, when given the opportunity to compete, also spoke up. Typically, rookie Nguyen Hoang Phuc of Nha Trang Dolphins Club once came on the field to replace mainstay Madarious Gibbs and scored a turning point in the match. Du Minh An of Saigon Heat Club last year was also excellent in marking foreign stars. Being able to restrain stars who inherently possess better physical and technical skills proves that Du Minh An has made a lot of progress in defense. This is also the result of many years of competing with foreign shooters.”

In addition to the assessment from experts, the transformation of domestic players was also shown through the VBA Awards 2023 closing ceremony when Vo Kim Ban became the first domestic player to win the Most Favorite Athlete award. Notably, 3/5 nominations for the scoring phase of the year category belonged to domestic players. Coach Predrag Lukic, an expert who has worked for 6 years at VBA, also shared the goal of developing domestic players: “Of course, the team's goal is to win the championship, but in sports, there are many factors that are more important than the title, which is to help players develop. In my opinion, those are more valuable than the highest position.”

Nguyen Hoang Phuc, an excellent young player of VBA 2023, also feels that he has been given many opportunities to develop. This pitcher confided: “This is my first year competing at VBA. I have learned a lot from experienced seniors, foreign players, Vietnamese players, etc., which has helped me improve. Personally, I feel happy and lucky to be competing at VBA 2023.”
