At 8:00 a.m. this morning (December 24), the Ministry of Transport held an inauguration ceremony for the My Thuan 2 Bridge project and the approach roads at both ends of the bridge; the My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway project. This is a project expected to be a "magic wand" for the development of the Mekong Delta, considered "the expectation of 20 million people in the delta".
On this occasion, Dan Tri reporters interviewed leaders of many localities in the West, or those who were local leaders in the Mekong Delta, about the significance and significance of these two projects to the land of Nine Dragons.
Can Tho and the Mekong Delta will "take off"
That is the belief that Mr. Truong Quang Hoai Nam - Deputy Head of the Party Central Committee's Foreign Affairs Commission (Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee for the period 2014-2020), shared with Dan Tri reporter, when asked about his feelings about the good news of the people in the delta.
According to Mr. Hoai Nam, the inauguration and opening of My Thuan 2 Bridge and My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway will help people and goods in Can Tho City and the South Hau River area to travel to Ho Chi Minh City conveniently, shortening the travel time to only 2 hours and possibly even shorter.
Along with the Central Government's construction of the Can Tho-Ca Mau and Chau Doc-Can Tho-Soc Trang expressways, Mr. Hoai Nam hopes that the projects will be completed on schedule to help Can Tho in particular and the Mekong Delta in general "take off".
Recalling the period 2014-2020, when he was Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, Mr. Hoai Nam was assigned to be in charge of the economic sector, including attracting investment, promoting the circulation of goods, developing tourism, services... These sectors all need good transport infrastructure for development.
"I remember, at that time, to solve the problem of "leaving the countryside but not leaving the homeland", we had to invest in rural areas. I and my comrades from the Textile and Garment Group went to survey from Ninh Kieu through Thoi Lai, Co Do to Vinh Thanh. They said: "Mr. Nam, we want to support Can Tho, but look at your traffic routes, container trucks cannot avoid each other; on 6-7 bridges, no container can pass through with a load of over 15 tons."
See, wanting people to invest but traffic is so difficult, it's very difficult - Mr. Nam recalled.
Not only Can Tho, Mr. Hoai Nam said that the whole Mekong Delta is facing the same problem. An Giang-Dong Thap-Can Tho cooperated with the Center for Business Research and Enterprise Support (BSA) to promote tourism but did not meet expectations.
"We surveyed and found that tourists travel all the way to Trung Luong Expressway, stop at My Tho (Tien Giang) and then return home, because the section from My Tho to My Thuan is often congested on weekends. Going on a trip and getting stuck in traffic is not fun, especially for foreign tourists."
Having witnessed such a difficult period of transport infrastructure, when hearing the news of the inauguration of the My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway and My Thuan 2 Bridge on December 24, Mr. Hoai Nam shared that he was very happy and believed that the Mekong Delta would develop more in the coming time.
"The project that people have long awaited"
Mr. Lu Quang Ngoi - Chairman of Vinh Long Provincial People's Committee, affirmed that the putting into operation of My Thuan 2 Bridge and My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway brings joy and excitement not only to the Party Committee, government and people of Vinh Long province but also to the people of the Mekong Delta.
"The My Thuan - Can Tho expressway and My Thuan 2 bridge have been long awaited by the people" - Mr. Ngoi emphasized when answering Dan Tri reporter.
According to the Chairman of the Vinh Long Provincial People's Committee, the inauguration of these two projects will facilitate people's travel and localities in transporting goods to Ho Chi Minh City and vice versa. For Vinh Long province, this is a condition and motivation to help the locality develop industrial parks and clusters in the area.
Vinh Long will connect raw material production areas to transport goods more conveniently, increasing economic value.
Attracting industry, manufacturing and processing
Speaking with Dan Tri reporters before the inauguration of the two major projects, Mr. Duong Tan Hien, Permanent Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee, repeatedly emphasized the phrase "very important project".
According to Mr. Hien, before now, if you go to the Mekong Delta provinces, the only road is National Highway 1. The speed of urbanization and socio-economic development in the delta region is causing this route to be overloaded, often causing traffic jams, especially during holidays and Tet...
"That is a nightmare not only for the people but also for investors" - said the Standing Vice Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee.
Particularly in Can Tho City, before the highway was inaugurated, the locality received much attention from investors. "We are very interested in industrial investors. If there is good infrastructure, it will attract investors. Having factories and enterprises will create jobs and revenue for the budget" - Mr. Hien said.
The value of goods will increase
According to Mr. Hien, when the highway is put into operation, localities need to maximize their advantages, first of all, prioritizing the organization of the traffic network connecting to the highway. Next is planning work areas, clusters, and logistics to serve production and warehouses - these areas will maximize the efficiency of the traffic route.
"For example, in Can Tho, industrial parks are being planned and built close to the highway. Investors are very interested in this factor when coming to learn, because being close to the highway will save on transportation costs. "We imagine industrial parks as tree branches, and highways as the backbone of the tree branches," Mr. Hien cited.
In a few years, when the horizontal highways are completed, the Mekong Delta will have a complete traffic infrastructure, helping to transport goods conveniently and quickly, contributing to increasing the value of goods in each locality.
Clearing the "bottleneck"
According to Mr. Truong Canh Tuyen - Permanent Vice Chairman of Hau Giang Provincial People's Committee, the Mekong Delta is considered a land rich in potential and advantages, especially in the production and export of food, seafood, and fruit trees. However, these advantages have not been fully exploited as expected and only stop at the potential level.
The Mekong Delta region has recently encountered many "bottlenecks" in development, of which the biggest "bottleneck" lies in infrastructure - Mr. Tuyen commented.
"The inauguration of My Thuan 2 Bridge and My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway not only quickly and conveniently connects the Southeast region with the Southwest region, but also helps localities in the Mekong Delta region to be connected with each other, forming a chain of even and interconnected economic development," said Mr. Tuyen.
The Standing Vice Chairman of Hau Giang Provincial People's Committee said that Hau Giang, like other provinces in the West, has main products of fruit trees and seafood, the main consumption markets are the Eastern provinces and for export. When the expressway is inaugurated, it will help transport quickly, reduce costs and always ensure fresh products to consumers. From there, the value of local agricultural products will increase and people's income will also be better.
Will grow rapidly
According to Mr. Nguyen Phuong Lam, Director of VCCI Can Tho, Can Tho is the first locality to benefit when the expressway opens to traffic. Next are the provinces south of Hau River such as Hau Giang, Soc Trang...
"2024 and 2025 will be years of growth for many localities benefiting from this traffic route," Mr. Lam believes.
However, when many localities have economic breakthroughs and accelerated development, traffic congestion will arise.
"The Ho Chi Minh City-Trung Luong Expressway - the gateway to 13 provinces and cities needs to be doubled in size. Trung Luong to My Thuan, the gateway to 10 provinces, also needs to be further expanded; From My Thuan to Can Tho, which is for 6 provinces below, those segments need to be calculated early. Only 4 lanes, especially from Trung Luong to here, is not enough" - the expert stated.
