On October 12, the My Thuan Project Management Board (Ministry of Transport) announced that it had completed the pre-feasibility study report for the Can Tho 2 Bridge construction investment project.

According to the plan, the bridge will be located about 4.5km downstream of the existing Can Tho bridge. The starting point connects with the end point of the My Thuan – Can Tho expressway at Cha Va intersection (Vinh Long province). The end point connects with the beginning point of the Can Tho – Ca Mau expressway at IC2 intersection (Can Tho city).
The bridge will be more than 14km long, with an investment scale of four lanes, and is expected to be built before 2030.
My Thuan Project Management Board is assigned as the investor to conduct the project's pre-feasibility study.
According to the My Thuan Project Management Board, Can Tho 2 Bridge across the main channel of Hau River is expected to have a 300m wide navigation width, with the main channel clearance equivalent to Can Tho 1 Bridge.
The main span of the bridge is designed with a cable-stayed structure. In parallel with the investment process of the Ho Chi Minh City - Can Tho railway line. The main span length of Can Tho 2 bridge is studied by the investor with two options:
Option 1: Invest in independent highway bridges and high-speed railways. Of which, the bridge has an investment of about 19,700 billion VND; the high-speed railway bridge is about 14,000 billion VND.
With this option, the cable-stayed bridge is more than 1km long, with the main span about 450m long, and has four lanes.
Can Tho 2 Bridge is designed with cable-stayed structure.
Option 2: Investing in a combined highway and railway bridge. The total investment is about 27,900 billion VND. At this time, the cable-stayed bridge will be more than 1.1km long, with a scale of four lanes.
According to the My Thuan Project Management Board, to ensure the area's traffic development needs, the investor has also researched and added a backup plan when the project is invested with a scale of six limited lanes and six complete lanes.
At that time, the total estimated investment for option 1 (adjusted accordingly) is about 22,300 billion VND; option 2 is about 32,300 billion VND.
“The project has conducted a simulation model of future traffic and has researched additional solutions for connection locations to the My Thuan – Can Tho expressway to select the optimal option.
In addition, the project also carefully studied the approach road solution as a viaduct to ensure reducing the impact on residential areas at both ends of the bridge according to Directive No. 28/CT-TTg dated August 26, 2024 of the Prime Minister on increasing the selection rate of reinforced concrete viaducts right from the design stage", the representative of My Thuan Project Management Board added.
The completion of the Can Tho 2 Bridge investment will promote the effectiveness of projects connecting the Mekong Delta region. Specifically, completing the connection of the My Thuan - Can Tho Expressway and the Can Tho - Ca Mau Expressway, opening the entire expressway from Ho Chi Minh City to Ca Mau. At the same time, connecting with the cross-axis expressways and national highways in the region, relieving congestion and reducing traffic accidents.
