Google announced that it will add 110 more languages to Google Translate, bringing the total number of translated languages to 243. This is considered a big step forward for Google Translate.
Among the newly added languages, Google has made a special effort to highlight Cantonese. Google said that Cantonese has been a long-requested language, but given its similarities to Mandarin, it took them a long time to find data to train their translation models.
Additionally, Google also added many African languages, accounting for a quarter of the total new languages added.
According to Google's report, the 110 new languages represent 614 million people of many ethnicities around the world. Some languages still have about 100 million speakers, but there are languages that are spoken by very few people, or even no one.
Adding rare languages to the translation system is also part of Google's process of preserving human culture.
These new languages are powered by an artificial intelligence language model developed by Google called AI PaLM 2. AI PaLM 2 is not only capable of translation, it can also quickly learn related languages, such as Hindi, which is similar to Awahdi, or French, which is related to Mauritian Ceole.
Currently, Google Translate is the translation tool that supports the most languages and has the most modern features.
