He is also Deputy Director of the Central Health Service - in charge of expertise, scientific advisor to the British Prime Minister.
Professor Jonathan has more than 30 years of experience in scientific research, is a global expert, has a great influence on many multinational experts, especially in the fields of influenza, vaccine research, epidemiology, infectious diseases, infection response, disease prevention, public health protection...
During the Covid-19 pandemic in Vietnam, the professor made great contributions in providing policy advice for Vietnam's Covid-19 prevention and vaccination work, and was honored by the Vietnamese Embassy in the UK.
This visit, Professor Jonathan Van Tam received special attention from the British Embassy in Vietnam as well as Vietnamese scientists because of his important role in research on infectious diseases, which are very important to Vietnam.
On the same afternoon, the professor spent the first working day of his schedule visiting the VNVC Vaccination Center System.
Speaking at VNVC, Professor Jonathan said that in the past 100 years, the world has experienced 5 major pandemics, most of which were related to infectious diseases and influenza. The next pandemic will certainly also be related to infectious diseases and we do not know for sure when it will happen. It is very important to proactively research and prepare for pandemics in all situations.
Professor Jonathan was impressed when hearing the VNVC representative report on increasing the number and percentage of children and adults in Vietnam who have access to high-quality vaccines equivalent to those in developed countries such as the UK, with international storage conditions but at costs suitable for the economic conditions of the Vietnamese people.
In particular, with his expertise, Professor Knight was particularly impressed when the number of people vaccinated against influenza in Vietnam increased from 4% to more than 9% nationwide and more than 14% in the VNVC Vaccination System. He highly appreciated this effort of VNVC because it brought great value to the community, especially high-risk groups for influenza and respiratory diseases caused by influenza viruses such as young children, pregnant women, the elderly, people with underlying diseases, etc. The Professor gave important advice on vaccination as well as disease prevention to experts and doctors of VNVC for the new era.
Professor Jonathan Van Tam is also proud that a Vietnamese unit like VNVC is a comprehensive strategic partner of many large pharmaceutical corporations from the UK such as GSK, AstraZeneca...
