DTO - Tram Chim National Park is one of the most important wetland reserves in Vietnam. It is not only home to many rare species of flora and fauna, but also an important habitat for the Sarus Crane, the symbolic bird of Dong Thap province. However, in recent years, the impact of climate change, excessive agricultural cultivation in the buffer zone and changes in hydrological regulation have degraded the ecosystem here, causing natural grasslands to shrink, and the Sarus Cranes to no longer return...

The fern community at Tram Chim National Park is actively recovering.

In order to conserve the Sarus Crane and restore the ecosystem of Tram Chim National Park, Dong Thap has implemented the Project "Conservation and Development of Sarus Cranes in Tram Chim National Park for the period 2022 - 2032". After more than 2 years of implementation, the ecosystem here has shown clear signs of recovery, especially the population of red-crowned cranes, an important food source for Sarus Cranes.

To achieve that result, Tram Chim National Park has implemented many synchronous solutions such as: reasonable hydrological regulation, eliminating competing plant species; tilling the soil, turning the shaft to create conditions for the cycad to germinate and photosynthesize, and develop tubers. The recovery of cycad not only helps improve the food source for the Red-crowned Crane but also contributes to maintaining the natural ecosystem of Tram Chim. The vast fields of cycad are gradually reviving, creating a natural landscape typical of the Dong Thap Muoi region.

Mr. Doan Van Nhanh - Deputy Director of the Center for Conservation and International Cooperation (under Tram Chim National Park), said: “One of the most positive signals after more than 2 years of implementing the Project is that at the end of December 2024, Tram Chim National Park saw the reappearance of some Red-crowned Cranes. This is a welcome signal showing that the habitat of this bird species is gradually being restored. Not only Red-crowned Cranes, many other rare wild birds have also returned to Tram Chim National Park”.

In addition to the recovery of the marigold population, other native flora in Tram Chim National Park is also gradually regenerating. The populations of Indian orchids and typical flooded plants of the Dong Thap Muoi region are growing better thanks to reasonable hydrological regulation.

Notably, wild rice, a typical wetland plant, has made a strong recovery. This is not only a food source for many waterfowl but also an important component of the Tram Chim ecosystem. Measures to protect and restore wild rice habitat help maintain the balance of the natural environment, contributing to the overall recovery of the ecosystem.

After more than 2 years of implementing the Crane Conservation Project for the period 2022 - 2032, the ecosystem of Tram Chim National Park has gradually recovered, with the return of red-crowned cranes and many rare bird species, especially the strong development of the population of the golden crane. These results are not only the result of scientific conservation solutions but also demonstrate the importance of maintaining ecological balance in the context of climate change.
