Increased accidents among children

The reason is that children are hyperactive, have long school breaks, and families' demand to return home for Tet and travel increases. Meanwhile, adults are often busy and do not closely supervise, causing children to encounter many unfortunate situations that endanger their health and lives.

Dangerous accidents when children are bitten by dogs

Recently, Hanoi Children's Hospital received an 8-year-old boy (Hanoi) who was bitten by a dog with multiple soft tissue injuries on his right ear, scalp, right forearm, and skin abrasions in many places.

The child had a nearly complete rupture of the right earlobe, severed cartilage of the external auditory canal and auricular cartilage. There was a 2.5 cm skin bridge at the earlobe, many deep tooth bites and many deep lacerations of the skin to the subcutaneous layer on the head and right arm, the longest laceration was about 5 cm. The child was taken to Chuong My Hospital for first aid and transferred to Hanoi Children's Hospital.

Thanks to microsurgery, doctors successfully preserved the ear of an 8-year-old boy.

Doctor Hung Anh - Department of General Surgery, Hanoi Children's Hospital said that the doctors performed emergency surgery on the child, cleaned as much as possible, removed damaged tissue, preserved the ear rim as much as possible, and ensured the shape of the ear and the structure of the ear canal.

The child underwent surgery to remove the crushed part, suture the cartilage of the external auditory canal and the auricular cartilage, and reconnect the ear vein using microsurgical techniques. During the postoperative period, the child was completely conscious and the surgical wound was stable.

Similarly, at the Department of Orthopedics and Spinal Neurology, the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases also admitted a 10-year-old boy named BA (from Hanoi) with many injuries on his body, including his temples, thighs, arms and legs.

The wounds had obvious, serious teeth marks from dog bites. After examination, the doctors stitched nine large open wounds and took care of the remaining wounds.

Boy B.A. was hospitalized with multiple injuries on his body, including his temples, thighs, arms and legs, due to a dog attack.

Doctor Pham Van Tinh - Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases said that the patient was closely monitored for 5-7 days to check for signs of infection. The hospital mobilized vaccination staff to inject anti-rabies serum, rabies vaccine, and tetanus vaccine immediately after the wounds were treated.

Prevention and proper first aid

At the National Children's Hospital, the Emergency and Poison Control Department of the unit received 3 serious drowning cases. Notably, all 3 children were not given proper first aid with mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and chest compressions, but were instead carried upside down and run. Therefore, the children were admitted to the hospital in critical condition, with respiratory and circulatory failure.

Another boy (8 years old, in Nam Dinh) was walking on the street when he was unfortunately hit by a motorbike. After the accident, the child had a headache, was agitated, had swelling in his jaw and face, and had many injuries on his body. The child was taken to the provincial hospital for first aid by his family, then transferred to the National Children's Hospital for intensive treatment.

Here, doctors diagnosed the child with a traumatic brain injury due to a traffic accident, along with multiple skin lacerations, swelling of the forehead, shoulders, arms, and mild bruising of the chest. After being treated for the wound and given intensive treatment, the child recovered.

Meanwhile, doctors at the Burn Unit – Orthopedics Department of the hospital also treated a boy (12 years old, in Hanoi) who suffered second and third degree boiling water burns in many areas of the body, including: head, neck, shoulders, chest on both sides and right forearm. Previously, the child was accidentally burned while bathing himself with a shower at home.

According to Dr. Nguyen Tan Hung - Deputy Head of the Emergency and Poison Control Department, National Children's Hospital, every year during Tet, the Emergency and Poison Control Department receives many cases of accidents and injuries in children. These accidents can be burns, broken bones, skin wounds, poisoning, choking on foreign objects... The main reason is that children do not have the ability to protect themselves.

Especially for children living in big cities, when returning to their hometown to celebrate Tet with their families in rural areas, there are new environments with many strange things for children and also more risks such as ponds, lakes, trees...

Therefore, medical experts recommend that parents should pay attention to prevent common accidents in children such as: animal bites, drowning, electric shock, burns, firecrackers, choking on foreign objects, chemical poisoning, food poisoning, CO poisoning due to coal heating, falls, traffic accidents, etc. At the same time, parents also need to equip themselves with proper first aid skills when children have accidents in life.

In addition, when a child is bitten or licked by an animal, parents or caregivers should wash the wound with clean water and soap for 15 minutes; disinfect the wound with alcohol or betadine; gently bandage the wound (do not sew the wound yourself); take the child to a medical facility for examination and vaccination; and monitor the animal bite for 15 days.
