Foreign exchange prices on November 20, 2024: USD continues to cool down

The Dollar Index (DXY), which reflects the value of the USD against six other major currencies, stopped at 107.05 points, up 39 points compared to November 21, 2024.

The greenback hit a 13-month high in volatile trading as investors digested labor market data and fresh comments from the US Federal Reserve on interest rate policy.

Weekly jobless claims fell 6,000 to a seasonally adjusted 213,000, the lowest in seven months and above the 220,000 forecast by economists polled by Reuters, signaling a recovery in the labor market from the effects of hurricanes and strikes.

Meanwhile, the report showed the labor market remained tight as unemployment rose to a three-year high, setting the stage for the Fed to cut interest rates again in December.

Fed officials, including Chairman Jerome Powell, have offered views suggesting that rate cuts may come more slowly than expected. Concerns about the possibility of higher inflation due to Trump's policies also pushed the dollar to 107.15 points, its highest level since October 4, 2023.

The dollar index, which measures the greenback against a basket of currencies, rose 0.39% to 107.03. The euro fell 0.64% to $1.0476, hitting a 13-month low of $1.0461.

“One could argue that the market is pricing in quite a bit of hawkishness right now… the dollar is already so loaded that I certainly wouldn’t be chasing it,” said Brad Bechtel, global head of foreign exchange at Jefferies.

Fragmentation in global trade will severely impact economic growth, and inflation may only gradually decline over the next few years, according to European Central Bank chief economist Philip Lane.

Expectations for a rate cut have recently dropped, with a 55.9% chance of a 25 basis point cut at the December meeting, down from 72.2% last week.

In an interview, New York Federal Reserve Bank President John Williams said that inflation will continue to decline and interest rates will gradually decline. At the same time, Richmond Bank President Tom Barkin warned that the United States is more vulnerable to inflationary shocks than before.
