Up to this point, farmers in the province have harvested more than 62,000/239,674 hectares of Winter-Spring rice 2024-2025, with an output of more than 360,000 tons.
Farmers in Long An province are entering the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice harvest period. Although rice yields are high, rice prices are low, while fertilizer and pesticide prices are high, increasing input costs and farmers' profits are not high.
In Vinh Hung district, up to now, farmers in the area have harvested 600/28,658 hectares of 2024-2025 winter-spring rice, with a fairly high yield of 7-8.5 tons/ha (fresh rice), and selling prices ranging from 5,000-7,500 VND/kg (depending on the variety). With this price, after deducting expenses, farmers do not earn much profit. Currently, the remaining rice crop is in the heading, flowering and ripening stages.
Mr. Nguyen Son Loc (Khanh Hung commune, Vinh Hung district) said: "My family has just harvested 4 hectares of OM18 rice variety, with a yield of more than 8 tons/ha, sold at 6,500 VND/kg, a decrease of 1,500 VND/kg compared to the 2023-2024 winter-spring crop. After deducting expenses, I earned a profit of about 20 million VND/ha, a decrease of about 10 million VND compared to the previous winter-spring crop."
According to Mr. Loc, in this production season, the profit is not high, the reason is low rice price; many pests and diseases cause damage, the price of agricultural materials increases, so the investment cost increases.
Low rice prices, farmers do not have much profit
According to information from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, up to now, farmers in the province have sown 239,674/225,950 hectares of rice in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, reaching 106% of the plan, equal to 99.26% over the same period; harvested 62,733 hectares, with an estimated dry rice yield of 5.81 tons/ha, and an output of 363,487 tons.
In the past week, the price of fresh rice was generally stable compared to the previous week. Specifically, IR4625 sticky rice was from 7,600-7,800 VND/kg, IR50404 rice was from 5,400-5,500 VND/kg, Dai Thom 8 rice was from 6,400-6,500 VND/kg, OM18 rice was from 6,300-6,500 VND/kg.
During the week, pests on the 2024-2025 winter-spring rice crop decreased in infected area, of which, the most significant decrease was in leaf blast and rice leaf borer. Leaf blast infected area was more than 2,700 hectares, down nearly 500 hectares compared to the previous week, the infection rate of 5-10% was nearly 2,600 hectares, the infection rate of 10-20% was 85 hectares, the infection rate of more than 20% was 50 hectares, appearing mainly on rice at the tillering and panicle stages, concentrated in most districts, Kien Tuong town and Tan An city.
For rice leaf miner, the infected area is 730ha, down 185ha compared to last week, the infection rate of 5-10% is 430ha, the infection rate of 10-20% is 300ha, appearing mainly on rice at the tillering and panicle stage, concentrated in Tan Hung, Thanh Hoa, Vinh Hung districts and Kien Tuong town.
Forecast of pests and diseases next week, brown planthoppers appear sporadically. Subjects such as leaf blast, brown planthoppers, rats, rice leaf miner, etc. decrease in infected area on 2024-2025 winter-spring rice at tillering stage. Leaf blight, brown planthoppers, rice neck blast, grain sterility, etc. increase in infected area on rice at heading and flowering stage.
Based on recommendations from experts, farmers need to be more proactive in preventing and controlling pests and diseases on rice to have a successful crop./.
