Pig price in Central Highlands

Unlike the strong upward trend in the North, the pig market in the Central Highlands this morning did not have many fluctuations.

Currently, traders in the region are purchasing live pigs at around 68,000 - 72,000 VND/kg. Of which, Lam Dong and Binh Thuan continue to maintain the highest price in the region, reaching 72,000 VND/kg.

Southern pig price

In the South, the price of live pigs continues to increase in many localities. Specifically, Binh Phuoc, Ben Tre and An Giang currently record a price of 72,000 VND/kg. Meanwhile, Tien Giang and Soc Trang are at 71,000 VND/kg, while Kien Giang and Vinh Long reach 70,000 VND/kg.

Survey shows that the price of live pigs in the Southern region is currently between 70,000 - 73,000 VND/kg. Dong Nai is currently the locality with the highest price in the country.

Supply drops after Tet holiday: After Tet, the number of pigs sold decreased because many farms sold out before Tet. In the context of supply not recovering, the price of pigs continued to increase.

Demand for pork remains high: After Tet, consumers tend to stock up on food, especially pork. In addition, restaurants, eateries and industrial kitchens are also back in operation, increasing demand.

Rising livestock costs: Since the end of 2024, the prices of animal feed, veterinary drugs and transportation costs have continuously increased, pushing up production costs. This forces farmers to sell live pigs at higher prices to maintain profits.

Export trends to China: Traders said that the Chinese market is increasing pork imports from Vietnam due to the decrease in domestic supply. This trend may continue to push up domestic pork prices in the coming days.

According to VTC News, Mr. Nguyen Kim Doan - Vice President of Dong Nai Livestock Association said that the outbreak of African swine fever at the end of 2024 has affected the supply of live pigs. Along with that, the strong increase in consumption demand during Tet also caused the number of pigs to decrease significantly after the holiday.

“Usually after Tet, demand decreases, causing the price of live pigs to go down. However, this year, the price of pigs has increased. Currently, traders are buying live pigs locally at 72,000 - 73,000 VND/kg. The main reason is the shortage of supply,” said Mr. Doan.

According to Mr. Doan, the total pig herd in the Southern region has decreased due to the impact of the epidemic and high consumption during Tet. This makes the supply insufficient to meet current demand.

He also shared that the epidemic forced farms and livestock businesses to sell early to limit losses. This led to a decrease in the number and weight of pigs sold, causing a major impact on market supply.

"At Tan Xuan wholesale market (Hoc Mon district, Ho Chi Minh City) and Binh Dien (District 8, Ho Chi Minh City), the number of pigs coming to the market has decreased sharply. Previously, about 7,000 pigs were consumed each day, but now this number is only about 3,000 - 3,500 pigs," said Mr. Doan.

Although current supply is down compared to the same period in 2024 and previous years, according to Mr. Doan, this situation may not last long.

A representative of the livestock industry in Dong Nai province said that when the price of live pigs is high, livestock farmers, especially large farms and businesses, will quickly boost herd restoration. At the same time, disease prevention work will also be strengthened to ensure healthy pigs, helping the market stabilize soon.
