Today (March 14) marks 36 years since the Gac Ma naval battle to protect the sacred sovereignty of the country's sea and islands (March 14, 1988 - March 14, 2024).
36 years ago, on March 14, 1988, at Gac Ma Island, Vietnamese Navy soldiers stood in a circle to protect the national flag planted on the island, affirming the sovereignty of the sea and islands of the country. Their heroic sacrifice was depicted by the proud monument cluster "Those who lie on the horizon" at the memorial site.

Navy soldiers pay tribute to martyrs of Gac Ma.
Colonel Pham Dinh Thanh, Political Commissar of the 1st class of the Naval Academy, expressed his appreciation and gratitude to the heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives for the sacred sovereignty of the sea and islands of the fatherland.
"Through this, we want to educate the next generation of soldiers to always be grateful for the contributions of their fathers and brothers. Through this, each individual needs to strive, train, and unite to protect the homeland's seas and islands, and the integrity of the territory," Colonel Thanh shared.
In Da Nang, the Da Nang City Naval Engineer Veterans Association and relatives of martyrs attended the memorial ceremony, offered incense, and remembered the sacrifice of 64 soldiers who died at Gac Ma Island (Photo: Hoai Son).

Colonel Hoang Duy Lap - former Commander of the 83rd Engineer Regiment expressed his emotion when talking about those who died for the independence of the nation. Mr. Lap said that this day every year will be the day everyone remembers so that they cannot and will never forget the sacrifice of the 64 soldiers at Gac Ma.
Mother Le Thi Lan (82 years old, residing in Nai Hien Dong ward, Son Tra district, Da Nang) is a relative of martyr Nguyen Huu Loc, with tears in her eyes when talking about her son who sacrificed in the Gac Ma incident (Photo: Hoai Son).
36 years have passed, Lan's mother still lives in the endless memories of her son, the soldier who sacrificed his life in the Gac Ma incident, and lost his life in the sacred ocean of the fatherland.
Lan's mother said that she misses her son, but if given the choice again, she believes that Loc will still choose the path he has taken, because the sovereignty of the country's sea and islands is sacred and inviolable.
Also on the morning of March 14, at Nai Nam communal house, the Truong Sa soldiers' liaison committee of Da Nang city from 1984 to 1988 held an incense offering ceremony to commemorate and pay tribute to the 64 martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Gac Ma battle (Photo: Hoai Son).
Nai Nam Communal House is where there is a memorial stele for heroic martyrs who sacrificed their lives through the ages of Hoa Cuong Bac Ward (Hai Chau District, Da Nang), including the names of 7 local martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the Gac Ma battle.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tan, head of the Truong Sa Military Liaison Committee of Da Nang City from 1984 to 1988, said that this is an annual activity held on March 14. Every year on this occasion, many veterans who worked at Truong Sa gather here to share the pain and loss with the families of the martyrs.
