Germany speaks out about reviving Nord Stream, worries about one thing related to Russia

Speaking in Brussels (Belgium) on March 17, German Vice Chancellor and Minister of Economy and Energy Robert Habeck emphasized that discussing the possibility of repairing or restarting the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines is a wrong direction.

The Nord Stream pipeline was once the most important gas route from Russia to Europe.

Nord Stream 1 operated from 2011 to 2022, while Nord Stream 2 - an $11 billion project - was completed in 2021 but has not yet entered service because Germany suspended its approval just before Russia launched a special military operation in Ukraine.

In September 2022, both Nord Stream 1 and one section of Nord Stream 2 were destroyed by mysterious explosions under the Baltic Sea, causing a near-halt in gas supplies from Russia to Europe.

Currently, the culprit behind the pipeline sabotage has not been found.

Since February 2022, Germany has been shifting its gas purchases to other countries. Norway is now the largest gas supplier, replacing Russia.

However, Mr. Habeck worries that the lesson of dependence on Russian energy may be forgotten.

Meanwhile, the return of President Donald Trump is creating turmoil.

Shares of Russian gas giant Gazprom have rebounded recently, on hopes that a quick peace deal in Ukraine could pave the way for the resumption of Moscow's gas exports to Europe, Alpha Bank said.
