Vietnam Tourism and the Breakthrough Journey

Báo Nhân dânBáo Nhân dân28/02/2025

With many positive signs, 2025 promises to be a turning point for Vietnam tourism, marking an acceleration, breakthrough, and overcoming of challenges. However, to realize this goal, our country's tourism industry still needs more drastic and breakthrough solutions to increase communication effectiveness as well as improve the quality of products and services to meet the increasing needs of tourists.

In the first months of the year, Vietnam tourism has continuously received good news. According to data from the Google Destination Insights platform, the number of international searches for tourist accommodation in Vietnam from the end of November 2024 to the end of January 2025 continuously increased by 15% -30% compared to the same period last year. Notably, in the first half of February 2025, the number of international searches increased by 30% -45%. The markets that are searching the most for Vietnam tourism are the US, Australia, India, Japan, Korea, Singapore, the UK, Canada, Germany and Malaysia. This affirms that, in addition to the interest of key markets such as Northeast Asia, Southeast Asia, Europe, and North America, Vietnam tourism is also attracting attention from two major markets, Australia and India, showing a lot of potential and room to boost the growth of international visitors this year.

In January 2025, the number of visitors to our country reached nearly 2.1 million, an increase of 18.5% compared to the previous month and an increase of 36.9% compared to the same period in 2024, marking a new record for the Vietnamese tourism industry, surpassing the figure of nearly 2 million international visitors in January 2020. Compared to the same period in 2019, before the Covid-19 pandemic, the number of visitors in January 2025 was 37.8% higher. These figures continue to demonstrate the clear effectiveness of the newly issued open visa policy as well as in-depth promotion and advertising programs in the past year, contributing to raising the level of Vietnam's tourism brand on the world tourism map. Recently, at the ASEAN Tourism Awards 2025 Ceremony, 17 Vietnamese tourism units were awarded in 4 categories: ASEAN Spa Service Award, ASEAN Community Tourism Award - CBT ASEAN, ASEAN Homestay Award and ASEAN Public Toilet Award. These are positive and promising signals that promise many improvements and breakthroughs for Vietnam's tourism in the coming time.

In 2025, Vietnam tourism aims to welcome 22-23 million international visitors. This goal demonstrates the determination of the entire industry to make tourism a spearhead economic sector of the country. According to experts, this is the time when our country's green economy needs to promote communication, especially through digital platforms to attract great interest from international markets, turning tourists' attention into decisions and actions to travel to Vietnam. And there is no more effective way than communicating through the appeal of tourism products. Mr. Nguyen Tien Dat, Director of AZA Travel Company, Vice President of Hanoi Tourism Association said that for a long time, Vietnam has had many tourism products to meet the needs of the Asian tourist market, but there are very few products for Western tourists, typically only a few discovery tourism products in Quang Binh or Ha Giang... Therefore, to increase its attractiveness, Vietnamese tourism must have high-quality tourism products to attract luxury tourists. Mr. Dat suggested that it is necessary to research and evaluate the tourist market to plan and develop tourism products for each target market, on that basis, build effective strategies to promote destinations and tourism products. The Director of AZA Travel said that in order to further enhance its competitiveness, Vietnamese tourism needs to continue to improve its tourism infrastructure and open the "door" of visas to welcome visitors in a more open and flexible manner.

According to General Director of Flamingo Redtours Nguyen Cong Hoan, in 2025, Vietnam tourism will face fierce competition in the region, when Southeast Asian countries continuously introduce many policies, promotion programs, and stimulus programs to gain market share of tourists. In the context of the global economy, tourists' spending power is more or less affected, but tourists' travel needs still require highly personalized experiences. This requires tourism businesses to coordinate with related units to build tourism products that are both affordable and constantly renewed to satisfy tourists' experiences. Recently, Euronews, a pan-European television news network, released the 2025 Tourism Trends Report. This report names 7 trends that will "reign" this year, including: New experiences (exploring lesser-known places); Cinema tourism; Digital Itineraries (plan trips with the help of technology); Cooling Off (find places with cool climates); Responsible Travel; Rail Travel; Astrotourism. These are practical suggestions for tourism professionals to promote their creativity and build specialized product systems to attract customers.

Discussing the overall solutions to help tourism make a breakthrough in the coming time, Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Administration of Tourism Pham Van Thuy said that, in addition to continuing to research and propose mechanisms and policies to remove bottlenecks, support tourism development, and strengthen public-private cooperation to mobilize social resources for tourism development, the tourism industry needs to coordinate with relevant units to proactively research and forecast to have plans to train and supplement high-quality human resources for the tourism industry, improve training capacity, and develop tourism human resources to meet the requirements of tourism professional standards in the region... The Vietnam National Administration of Tourism has proposed a plan to organize programs to introduce Vietnamese tourism, connect businesses in Chinese, Korean, Japanese-speaking markets..., and is expected to attend some of the world's leading tourism fairs this year. Recently, the Government issued Resolution No. 11/NQ-CP on visa exemption under the Tourism Development Stimulus Program for citizens of the Republic of Poland, the Czech Republic and the Swiss Confederation from March 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025. These are moves that are expected to create a "push" to make Vietnam an attractive international tourist destination in 2025 ■
