Thai people were outraged by the image of two foreign female tourists lying in the sun in front of the Thai royal palace, where solemn ceremonies take place.

Images of two women wearing scantily clad clothes and sunbathing in front of the Thai Royal Palace went viral on social media over the weekend, angering many Thai people who said they were "lacking manners and etiquette."

Most of the comments said that this behavior is disrespectful to Thai people because they do not know about the culture and laws of the Land of Golden Pagodas. "No one goes abroad and breaks the laws of that country. Someone please tell them that doing this here is not appropriate because Thai people consider this area sacred," one user commented.

Others, however, have suggested that local authorities are partly to blame for not enforcing clear rules. The tourists could be forgiven for not knowing that sunbathing at Sanam Luang is disrespectful. One social media user suggested that perhaps in their country, they could sunbathe next to the palace and felt that the area was clean and pleasant, so they came to enjoy it.

Earlier, on January 14, at Chiang Man Temple in Chiang Man, two women were also seen sunbathing in the temple grounds. A tuktuk driver took a photo of them and posted it on social media.

The abbot of the temple told Thailand’s The Nation newspaper that the two tourists left as soon as they were told to. He also said that the driver should have explained the situation to the tourists instead of sharing their unflattering photos on social media.

In 2017, two American tourists were arrested by Thai police for taking nude photos at a popular temple in Bangkok and posting them on social media.

In Thailand, visitors need to pay attention to their clothing, dress modestly, cover their shoulders and legs to comply with general regulations when visiting temples in this country.
