A support for poor youth to rise up

Dakrong is a mountainous district located in the west of Quang Tri province, where the terrain is mostly complex hills and mountains, divided by many rivers and streams. 80% of the local population are ethnic minorities Van Kieu, Pa Ko, whose lives are still full of difficulties...

Secretary of the District Youth Union, Chairman of the Vietnam Youth Union of Dakrong District Nguyen Duc Linh said that in order to support and accompany young people, especially ethnic minority young people in the area, in recent years, the Vietnam Youth Union of the district has organized many coordinated activities, thereby donating 60 pairs of breeding goats to 60 ethnic minority young households in Ba Nang, Huc Nghi, Huong Hiep communes; more than 2,000 breeding ducks to poor young households.

From projects on livelihood diversification and poverty reduction model development sponsored by the Vietnam Youth Support Center, the association has trained in scientific and technical knowledge, supported plants, seeds, and materials for 105 poor and near-poor households who are young people in Huong Hiep and Mo O communes with a total value of 1.5 billion VND.

In addition, the Vietnam Youth Union of the district has organized dozens of activities to provide advice, orientation, and job introduction for thousands of members, union members, youth, and demobilized soldiers; coordinated with vocational training facilities, labor export, enterprises, production and business establishments to help young people in developing economic models, vocational training, and labor export.

In particular, from the needs of local youth, in the past term, the Standing Committee of the District Youth Union and the Vietnam Youth Union of the district coordinated with the Social Policy Bank (CSXH) of the district to support youth in accessing preferential loans entrusted through the unit with a total outstanding loan balance of up to 80 billion VND. At the same time, activities to accompany and support young people in starting a business were focused on by the Youth Union and Association at all levels in the district.

In particular, focusing on raising awareness, skills and knowledge for young entrepreneurs; coordinating with agencies, organizations and businesses to support capital, science and technology, promote brands and products for young entrepreneurs, promote activities to support young entrepreneurs in applying digital platforms in production, business and market access.

Forming many effective economic models

Born and raised in Ra Lu village, Huong Hiep commune, after finishing junior high school, Ho Van Hien, following the guidance and advice of the youth union members in the village, decided to study carpentry.

After two years of vocational training, Mr. Hien went everywhere to find work, but the income from working as a wage earner was not enough to cover his living expenses. In 2017, returning to his hometown, from the capital of 30 million VND he had saved and the preferential loan support from the district's Social Policy Bank entrusted to the commune union, Mr. Hien borrowed another 30 million VND, then borrowed more money from relatives to open a carpentry workshop.

With the determination of youth, passion for the profession and importantly the "support" from local unions and associations, Mr. Ho Van Hien and his wife have stood firm in the carpentry profession. "Currently, my carpentry workshop, in addition to processing natural wood products, also accepts projects related to industrial wood in neighboring areas such as Vinh Linh district, Quang Binh province.

Depending on the work, sometimes we have to hire 2-3 more people to help. The average income of my wife and I from the carpentry workshop is 10-12 million VND/month," Mr. Hien happily shared.

Mr. Nguyen Duc Linh added: “An income of 10 million VND/month may not be high for many people, but for young ethnic minorities in the poor district of Dakrong, it is a great effort.

Through many of our support policies and activities, up to now, the whole district has 40 economic models owned by young people with an income of over 100 million VND/year.

Most of the models mainly focus on the fields of cultivation, animal husbandry, household carpentry, agricultural services...

These models have created jobs for hundreds of local youth workers. At the same time, we consider these to be typical examples, concrete evidence to spread to many union members and youth in the district to learn and follow.
