The Swedish women's team turned the United States into former champions after a dramatic penalty shootout victory in the round of 16 of the 2023 Women's World Cup.

Sweden won 5-4 against the US in a penalty shootout after the two teams went 120 minutes without a goal being scored.

This result is a worthy reward for Sweden after what they have shown since the beginning of the tournament, especially in the penalty shootout in the match against the US.

In the "shootout," the Swedish women's team faced the risk of being eliminated in the penalty shootout twice when Bjorn and Blomqvist missed their kicks.

However, luck smiled on them when Rapinoe and Smith of the US team failed to take advantage of the opportunity.

After a few moments of panic, the Swedish women's team had a great opportunity when Hara took the 7th shot and hit the post.

Of course, Lina Hurtig did not miss the opportunity when she successfully executed her shot, to help Sweden win the final match 5-4.

Notably, in the final kick, the drama was heightened when the referee had to rely on goal-line technology to determine that the ball had crossed the line before being pushed out by goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher, meaning victory for Sweden.
