Located on the southern edge of the Red River Delta, in Ninh Binh province, northern Vietnam, about 90km southeast of Hanoi, Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex was recognized by UNESCO as the first mixed heritage in Southeast Asia in June 2014.
Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex consists of 03 areas with a total area of 12,000 hectares, of which 6,000 hectares are the core area including: 1. Trang An cave area. 2. Hoa Lu ancient capital area. 3. Bai Dinh pagoda area. Trang An world cultural and natural heritage is also a place of outstanding people, where Dinh Tien Hoang Emperor built the first centralized state of Vietnam in 968, establishing Hoa Lu ancient capital - the first capital of Vietnam with sovereignty with mountains as walls, rivers as roads, caves as palaces . Therefore, historians call Hoa Lu capital the stone capital. At Trong cave, Boi cave, Moi cave in Trang An eco-tourism area, archaeologists from Cambridge University together with Vietnamese archaeologists discovered and excavated, proving that there was the presence of prehistoric people about thirty thousand years ago. Bai Dinh Pagoda has a total area of 1,700 hectares, is one of the four towns of the ancient capital Hoa Lu, where Emperor Dinh Tien Hoang built a temple to worship Thanh Cao Son to guard the southern border of the ancient capital Hoa Lu. Bai Dinh Pagoda is also the birthplace of Saint Nguyen Minh Khong (Ly Quoc Su) - the one who cured King Ly Than Tong at the medicinal herb garden of Bai Dinh Pagoda. Nguyen Minh Khong is also the one who built the Four Great Treasures of Vietnam (Bao Thien Tower, Quy Dien Bell, Pho Minh Cauldron, Quynh Lam Maitreya Statue). Currently, Bai Dinh Pagoda has been restored, with the idea of Monk Nguyen Minh Khong, Bao Thien Tower of Bai Dinh Pagoda is now 100m high, the tallest Buddha Tower in Asia to date; Maitreya Statue weighs 90 tons on Ba Rau Hill; Bell Tower with a bell weighing 36 tons, the largest bell in Vietnam at present; The 100-ton, gold-plated Sakyamuni statue has been recognized by the Asian Record as the largest bronze and gold statue in Asia, etc. and many other records have been confirmed. Bai Dinh Pagoda is also the place where the World Vesak Congress was successfully held with more than 100 countries participating in 2008 and 2014. Currently, the number of tourists to Trang An - Bai Dinh is about 6.5 million visitors/year, this is the largest domestic and international tourist attraction in the North. Especially with the beautiful and charming landscape of Vietnam, the famous American film studio Warner Bros. filmed Kong - Skull Island with 80% of the scenes taken in Trang An. Trang An Tourist Area was chosen by Hollywood director as the main setting for the blockbuster "Kong: Skull Island" The Trang An Scenic Landscape Complex Management Plan was developed in 2015 under the guidance of the Department of Cultural Heritage - Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the National Cultural Heritage Council and domestic and international experts, including experts from ICOMOS and IUCN. Based on the inheritance of the previous draft plan, and carefully considering the regulations and requirements of the Guidelines for the Implementation of the Convention and relevant laws of Vietnam, the plan comprehensively identifies issues of vision, basic guiding principles of protection, management, objectives and activities related to the protection, sustainable use, preservation and promotion of the values of the Heritage Site, especially effectively addressing issues of tourism and archaeological management. Furthermore, the Trang An Landscape Complex Management Plan also creates a legal basis for the implementation of Vietnam's international commitments and obligations in protecting, preserving, embellishing, introducing, promoting the value and transferring the Heritage to future generations in accordance with the spirit of the World Heritage Convention.
